Washington Sweeps Portland State to Open Spring Schedule
January 11, 2020 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- The University of Washington women's tennis team opened the spring schedule in dominating fashion, cruising past Portland State 7-0 on Saturday morning at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies open the season with a 1-0 record while handing the Vikings a loss in their season-opener. Washington has now won eight-straight season-openers.
"It was so good to be back on the courts and to get our season underway," said Washington Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "The girls put a lot of work in this fall and prepared really well over the break and came back extremely motivated to start the season off strong. I thought we looked good today and I thought we executed our game plans well and competed at a high level across the board."
The Huskies started strong with a pair of quick sweeps in doubles play. Nika Zupancic and Zoey Weil cruised to a 6-0 win on court three, as did Sedona Gallagher and Katarina Kopcalic on court two. Vanessa Wong and Natsuho Arakawa picked up a 6-2 win on court one to wrap things up.
In singles competition, Vanessa Wong--ranked No. 102 nationally in the last ITA ratings--picked up a quick 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Zoey Weil was the next off at No. 5, cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 win. Sedona Gallagher followed that with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No.4 to clinch the match. As the rest of the singles played out, Ashley Chang picked up her first collegiate dual victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 with No. 88 ranked Katarina Kopcalic winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.
"Being able to play my first match for the Dawgs is something I've been looking forward for a while now," said Chang. "It's a great feeling to be out there with the other girls representing one team."
"It was so great to be out on the court competing again today," said Weil. "I'm really happy with how we performed today and am excited to keep improving.
"This team loves competing together and we are looking forward to a couple more home matches tomorrow and a great season ahead," said Stephenson.
Washington returns to the courts on Sunday, hosting a pair of matches, facing Eastern Washington at Noon followed by a match against cross-town foe Seattle U at 3:00 p.m.
