UW Wins Second-Straight Tournament to Start Season
September 24, 2019 | Men's Golf
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Washington men's golf team won it's second-straight team tournament on Tuesday with a nine-stroke victory at the Old Town Club Collegiate. The Dawgs, fresh off their team title at the Husky Invitational, won with a commanding 30-under 810 (272-266-272). Additionally, junior Noah Woolsey took home the individual crown for his first outright collegiate tournament win.
It is the first time since April of the 2009-10 season that the Dawgs have won back-to-back team titles. Additionally, Washington's 30-under 810 is their second-best 54-hole score in program history.
"It was really exciting to earn another team victory," said head coach Alan Murray. "Wake Forest is a good team and to win on their home course isn't easy to do. We can still get better and have room to improve but this should show our guys that we're able to accomplish some great golf and it gives us momentum moving forward."
Woolsey's performance over the 54-hole event was the best of his career as he finished with a 15-under 195 (66-66-63) to take the individual trophy by two strokes. The junior had just one blemish during the three-round tournament and closed his final 37 holes with a perfectly clean scorecard. Woolsey's final round was his best as he carded a 7-under 63 thanks to an eagle and five birdies. The junior also shared a claim of the individual crown in the season-opening Husky Invitational a week prior.
"Noah has been really, really impressive over these first two tournaments to start the season finishing at the top," added Murray. "He played some fantastic golf with just the one error over 54 holes and to finish atop the leaderboard in back to back events is just impressive."
Finishing just behind him was senior Henry Lee as he took home fifth with a 9-under 201. Lee recorded rounds of 67-63-71 for his second-straight top-10 showing while his 13 birdies over the two-day tournament tied for the most by a Husky.
Freshman Bo Peng matched his second-round score on Tuesday as he once again carded a 1-under 69 to move him nine spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 20th at 1-under 209 (71-69-69). He shared a spot at 20th with teammate and freshman Petr Hruby as he closed the tournament with his best score at 3-under 67. Hruby, competing as an individual, went 71-71-67 to also finish at 1-under 209.
Rounding out the UW lineup was sophomore Paul Margolis who also put together his best scorecard on Tuesday as he closed with a 1-under 69 to jump 14 spots into a tie for 46th at 4-over 214.
"Henry had a really good tournament as well and Bo, as a freshman, put together another solid showing as did Petr tying for 20th," said Murray. "Paul closed with a great back nine today and even though Jan struggled a little bit, he still finished with two sub-70 rounds and was close to the top 25."
Up next for the Dawgs is the Maridoe Intercollegiate in Carrollton, Texas, October 6-8.
