No. 12 Huskies Cruise Past San Diego State 2-0 in Pac-12 Opener
September 19, 2019 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Lucas Meek continued his red-hot offensive play and Sam Fowler earned his third-straight shutout as No. 12 Washington opened Pac-12 play with a 2-0 victory over San Diego State on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 6-1-0 on the season and to 1-0-0 in the Pac-12 while the Aztec fell to 2-3-1 and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Meek once again made the most of his limited time on the pitch, scoring his team-best fourth goal of the season to get Washington going early. The redshirt sophomore knocked home a failed clearance from 15 yards away to give the Huskies' the first goal of the game in the sixth minute.
The teams battled back and forth through the rest of the half with the Huskies posting a total of 10 shots through the first 45 minutes, but unable to find an insurance goal.
That goal came early in the second half as a San Diego State defender was called for a handball on a cross in the box giving the Huskies a penalty kick. Junior Blake Bodily stepped up to take the spot kick and sent an off-speed shot right down the middle while the keeper dove left to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute.
Bodily had a couple of good chances to get a goal in the run of play, getting behind the Aztec defense and chipping a shot over the head of the on-rushing keeper from 25 yards out. However, the ball took a couple of bounces and just missed the far post.
Fowler recorded his third-straight cleansheet in as many collegiate starts in goal for Washington, making four saves including a diving save in the final seconds of the match to keep the shutout.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, hosting UCLA in a Pac-12 showdown at 4:00 p.m. The match is being billed as the "Dawg Days of Summer" celebration with giveaways and special deals to all UW students in attendance.
