Trio Of Distance Transfers Adds Depth As Season Arrives
September 17, 2019 | Cross Country, Track & Field
SEATTLE – As the Husky cross country squads transition from preseason training into their first competitive runs this weekend, the outlook for both teams has been enhanced by a trio of transfers. On the men's side, Jack Rowe and Andrew Jordan have been on board since last track season ended and are ready to make their Husky debuts this weekend. The women also welcomed a new talent to town this week in Haley Herberg, who will begin training with the Huskies when they return from their season opener and will be eligible to race this fall.
All three new distance Dawgs have impressive accolades and personal-bests, and all three fit the culture that Coaches Maurica and Andy Powell have continued to develop. All three have finished among the top-90 individuals at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and they are ready to help the Huskies pursue their team goals this fall.
Rowe hails from London and spent the past two seasons at the University of San Francisco. He's coming off a strong track season for the Dons where he was 15th at NCAA West Prelims in the 5k and 18th in the 10k, and he lowered his personal-bests in both events last spring to 13:54.99 in the 5k and 28:50.22 in the 10k. One year ago at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Rowe finished 83rd overall, and he was fifth at West Regionals to earn All-West Region honors.

Jordan comes to the Huskies from Iowa State where he earned two All-America honors and was the 2017 Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year. The Ohio native has raced at the past three NCAA Cross Country Championships, taking 15th as a sophomore to earn All-America honors and placing 46th last year as a junior. He qualified for the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000-meters based on a time he ran at Washington's Dempsey Indoor facility, as he ran 7:51.29 at the UW Invitational. Jordan went on to take 12th in the 3k at NCAA Indoors. He also owns a Big 12 Indoor title in the 5,000-meters in 2018, and he set a 5k personal-best of 13:44.50 at the Portland Track Festival in 2018.

Herberg, the newest addition, was the 2018 Big 12 Women's Newcomer of the Year for cross country. During her freshman season at Oklahoma, Herberg took third at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships, earned All-West Region honors with a fifth-place Midwest Region finish, and qualified individually to the NCAA Championships where she was 78th overall, and fifth among all freshmen at NCAAs.
Indoors, Herberg broke 16-minutes in the 5k indoors, running 15:58.44 to break the Oklahoma school record. She took second at the 2019 Big 12 Indoors in both the 3,000-meters and 5,000-meters. Outdoors, Herberg was third in the Big 12 1,500-meter final in a PR of 4:20.03, and she placed 18th at NCAA West Prelims in the 5,000-meters. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif. was the 2017 Orange County Register Athlete of the Year for cross country and Division-II state champ.
