Huskies Take Tie In First Game
August 23, 2019 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE โ ย The Washington Huskies came out strong in their first game of the 2019 season but had to settle for a 0-0 tie with the Portland Pilots. The Huskies fired ten shots in the first half alone, only allowing one in that time, but could not get the goal needed for the win.
Dani Hansen made her first collegiate start and earned her first shutout, stopping the only two Portland shots she faced to blank the Pilots. Hansen made a particularly good save in the first half, knocking down a breakaway attempt before leaping on the loose ball.
"Portland did a great job defending, they played narrow and crowded the midfield," said Lesle Gallimore. "Unfortunately we didn't force their keeper make a lot of saves. It's early in the season so we can work on this, and we've got some other players [on the bench] who can play, so it'll be a competition for who can find that finishing piece."
Washington controlled the ball for much of the game and continually threatened on set pieces, earning 13 corners to Portland's three. Ruby Hellstrom had three shots on goal, all in the first half, while Isabella Castro had two. Summer Yates, Karlee Stueckle, Olivia van der Jagt, and Kaylene Pang all had multiple shots in the game as well.
