Olympic Qualification On Line As Huskies Compete At World Championships
August 22, 2019 | Men's Rowing
Purple and Gold will mix with the national colors of nine different nations next week as a large group of Washington rowers will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Championships – all with the added motivation of earning berths in the 2020 Olympic Games.
In all, 20 current and former UW athletes will row in nine race categories, representing the following nine nations: United States, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Serbia, Greece, New Zealand, Germany and the Netherlands.
Racing on the Danube River in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, begins on Sunday, Aug. 25 and continues through the following Sunday, Sept. 1.
With the 2020 Olympic Games just a year away, the 2019 World Championships also act as the first method of qualification for the Olympiad. The 2020 Tokyo Games will feature men's and women's competitions in seven race categories: single, double and quad sculls; lightweight double sculls; coxless pair and four; and eight with coxswain. The top finishers in each event at World Championships (the number varies by event; see link to information at top-right) will gain a berth in the Olympics.
Along with the 20 current former Husky athletes, UW women's head coach Yasmin Farooq will be in Austria as the coach of the U.S. women's pair, which includes veteran Megan Kalmoe '06.
Much of the regatta will air on television in the United States on the NBC Olympic Channel, which can be found on channel 660 on Comcast/Xfinity, 624 on DirecTV and 389 on Dish. If you have a different provider, google your cable provider's name and "NBC Olympic Channel" to find the channel. You can also stream on NBCSports.com with the proper subscriptions, etc.
