Bajema Named Preseason All-Pac-12
August 12, 2019 | Volleyball
SEATTLE - The Husky volleyball team was voted fourth in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll today, just one point out of third-place. Senior Kara Bajema was also voted to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team for the second year in a row. Washington returns all of its starters from a squad that reached the Sweet 16 a year ago.
Stanford captured the 2018 NCAA Championship and was voted the favorite to win the Pac-12 with the maximum of 121 points and 11 first-place votes. USC was second with 104 points, then Oregon with 99 and the Huskies with 98, with Utah coming in fifth with 68 points and Arizona sixth with 65 to complete the top half of the voting.
Bajemaย (Lynden, Wash.) was an All-Pac-12 selection last year while leading the Husky offense and she was also named an AVCA Third Team All-American. The Huskies also return starting outside hitter Samantha Drechsel, both starting middle blockers in Avie Niece and Lauren Sanders, starting setter Ella May Powell, starting libero Shayne McPherson, and sophomores Shannon Crenshaw and Claire Hoffman who each saw time as starters on the outside as well. Bajema, Sanders, Powell, and Niece all took part in USA Volleyball programs over the summer as well.
Washington opens its 2019 season on the road in Hawaii on Aug. 30 against St. John's and plays its first home match on Sept. 21 against Wisconsin.
