
Slenning Takes Fifth At Pan American U20

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Husky Alex Slenning repped the U.S.A. today at the Pan American U20 Championships in Costa Rica, with the rising sophomore finishing fifth in the steeplechase finals. Also in action today was 400m hurdler Cass Elliott who advanced through to the finals for Team USA.
Slenning and Elliott each set Washington Freshman Records this season in their respective events and qualified for Team USA by virtue of a gold medal for Slenning at the USATF U20 Championships and a silver for Elliott. Both also scored top-five finishes at the Pac-12 Championships this year and top-20 finishes at NCAA West Prelims.
At Estadio Nacional, Slenning finished fifth today in the 13-athlete field in a time of 9:27.74 with Cesar Daniel Gomez Ponce of Mexico winning in 9:11.05. Slenning was the top finishing American.
In the 400-meter hurdles semifinals, Elliott ran the fourth-fastest overall time in the semifinals to advance to Sunday's final. The Seattle native ran 51.10 to advance.
