Huskies Can’t Overcome Four Home Runs By Wildcats
April 05, 2019 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona hit four home runs Friday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson to sprint past Washington for a 9-3 win in the opening game of the series.
The Huskies (14-10, 5-5 Pac-12) have now dropped five-straight games, while the win snapped a seven-game skid for the Wildcats (14-14, 3-7).
The Wildcats hit back-to-back home runs twice in the game, both times off freshman starter David Rhodes (4-3). The first time came in the first inning when fellow freshman Austin Wells – who came up a double short of hitting for the cycle – took him deep to right field with a man on and junior Nick Quintana followed with a shot to left-center field that made the score 3-0.
The Wildcats would repeat the feat in the third inning, with Quintana and Dayton Dooney both connecting for solo shots.
Rhodes entered the weekend having allowed a total of five runs over his previous four starts. He also had not allowed a home run on the year, but Arizona was able to take advantage of some elevated pitches and chased Rhodes after 3 2/3 innings.
The Huskies got a pair of runs back in the fifth on a two-run home run from their red-hot catcher Nick Kahle. The junior followed a lead-off single from Braiden Ward off Arizona starter Randy Labout (3-3) with his fifth long ball of the season and ran his team-leading RBI total to 31.
Arizona answered right back in its half of the fifth with two runs on a Cameron Cannon double to expand its lead back to five runs.
The Huskies chipped away with a run in the sixth on a Mason Cerrillo RBI groundout, but 7-3 was the closest they would get the rest of the way. Arizona tacked on two more runs in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Six different UW pitchers saw action, including two innings of scoreless work with five strikeouts for sophomore Jack Enger.
The Huskies reached double-digits in hits with 11. Kahle, Ben Baird and Ramon Bramasco each had two hits.
Washington will try to even the series Saturday and will send Jordan Jones to the hill. The 3:00 p.m. game will be shown by the Pac-12 Network.
