LONG BEACH, Calif. – Back at the site where she first broke the hammer throw school record two years ago, senior Onyie Chibuogwu broke it for the third time in her career today, spinning and firing the ball 208-feet, 3-inches, to provide the second Husky school record in the last two days. This one came at the Beach Invitational, one day after Hannah Rusnak set the heptathlon school record at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
Chibuogwu's mark was the big highlight on Friday, which saw the throwers start the action in Long Beach, while a handful of middle and long distance Dawgs raced at the Cardinal Classic in Stanford. Izzi Batt-Doyle and Fred Huxham impressed at Stanford, with Batt-Doyle winning the 5k and Huxham posting a Regional qualifier.

Onyie breaks the school record once again at the same place where she first broke it in 2017. Her 2??0??8??-3?? mark would rank 21st in the NCAA entering the week!#GoHuskies @_onyie pic.twitter.com/IzzwFhSpGO
Chibuogwu's record hammer throw came on her second attempt. The mark was nearly seven feet farther than her previous record, 201-6, that she set last at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships when she was conference runner-up.
On her fifth attempt, Chibuogwu nearly broke the mark again, as she threw 207-8 for the second-best throw of her career.
Chibuogwu had to wait a while to get another crack at extending her record, as she redshirted the 2018 season, but after setting a big PR indoors in the weight throw, it was clear she was ready to get back over the 200-foot mark outdoors, it was just a matter of when and how far over.
Coming into the weekend, that toss would rank Chibuogwu 21st in the NCAA this season, and fourth in an extremely strong Pac-12.
Also in the women's hammer, junior Angel Nkwonta posted a new PR of her own, as she threw 182-6 on her third attempt. She remains No. 5 in school history with the new career-best.
Denham Patricelli and Jacob Wachtendonk both threw javelin today, with the senior Patricelli throwing 217-11 and the sophomore Wachtendonk going 205-9. On the women's side, junior Emmy Engle went 139-1 and senior Katherine Taylor threw 138-8, a season's best for Taylor, while redshirt freshman Ginny Mehl threw 129-10.
Cardinal Classic
Up the coast at Stanford's Cobb Track, a handful of Huskies raced in the first evening of action at the Cardinal Classic.
Senior Izzi Batt-Doyle returned to the track where she crushed the school 10,000-meter record just a few weeks back, and she rolled to a victory tonight in the top section of the 5,000-meters. Batt-Doyle led the race right behind the pacer for the most of the way, then went back and forth a few times late with Savannah Carnahan of Furman, but Batt-Doyle made the last move and pulled away down the homestretch to win in 15:43.33.
That time was a new outdoor personal-best for the senior from Adelaide, Australia, and just a couple seconds off her indoor PR of 15:40.53 set indoors this season. It puts her into the No. 5 spot in school history outdoors.
The last race of the night was the men's invitational 5k, where indoor All-American Fred Huxham notched a quality time of 13:49.47 to easily secure a trip to the NCAA West Preliminaries next month.
Also racing in an earlier women's 5k section, and setting two big personal-bests, were sophomores Hannah Waskom and Kiera Marshall. Waskom ran 16:37.75, a 31-second PR, and Marshall crossed in 16:45.50, a PR of twenty seconds.
The first Huskies on the track at Stanford were Nicole Goecke and Kelly Makin in heat two of the 800-meters. Goecke set the pace and then closed strong to run a big season's-best time of 2:07.62, while Makin finished in 2:12.80. A few minutes later, Hannah Derby raced in the top section and she finished with a time just a fraction faster than Goecke's, as she crossed in 2:07.58.
In the men's 800-meters, sophomore Devan Kirk ran a season-best time of 1:49.90 to take second and right behind him was senior Connor Morello in 1:50.00.
A lot more action will come on Saturday, with the sprinters, jumpers, vaulters, and some more throwers in action at Long Beach State and more distance events at Stanford including the 1,500-meters, 10k, and steeplechases.
