Huskies Split In Queenโs Cup Finale

HONOLULU โ The Husky beach volleyball team split two more matches today at the Queen's Cup in Waikiki, winding up in third place after a loss to 14th-ranked Loyola Marymount followed by a win over San Jose State. The Dawgs will have one more day in Hawaii, staying to place the sixth-ranked Rainbow Wahine on Monday evening.
Junior Shayne McPherson was named Best Defender in the tournament honors following Sunday's action.

Yesterday in round robin play, the Huskies lost a 5-0 decision to the Lions of LMU but three matches went to third sets. Today, however, LMU played even tougher, and another 5-0 win for the Lions did not have as many chances for the Dawgs today. The only match that went to a third set this time around was the No. 5 match, where Chloe Newton and Callie Weber, who won the first set, 21-14, over Panter/Martin, but dropped set two, 13-21, and the third set, 11-15.

The Huskies had to get some third sets to go their way in the rematch against the Spartans, and this time they came through. San Jose State won four of the five first sets, but the Huskies came back to force third sets in all four of those matches, and won three of them.

The one straight set match was a win for the Dawgs as Emma Calle and Samantha Drechsel were 21-15, 21-12 winners at No. 4 over Grajeda/Zdroik to put the Huskies up 1-0.

Kara Bajema and Shayne McPherson fought back from an 18-21 first set loss to win the next two sets, 21-15, 15-13, over Andrade/Gavio for the second point. Destiny Julye and Kristen Gengenbacher then clinched the win with a 21-23, 21-11, 15-12 win over Bettenay/Schwarz at No. 1.

Newton and Weber also finished a comeback at No. 5, beating Golbeck/Reistad, 17-21, 21-17, 15-10. At No. 3, Cat McCoy and Avie Niece also forced a third set, and had a couple match points, but Thomison/Smevog rallied for a 21-13, 19-21, 16-14 win for the final 4-1 score.
