Beach Dawgs Pick Up First Wins Over Pilots, Ducks
March 09, 2019 | Beach Volleyball
VANCOUVER, Wash. – Washington got a bit taller over the past week and some new pairings helped the Huskies secure their first two wins of the beach season today at Frenchman's Bar Park in Vancouver, Wash. The Dawgs (2-3) got a 4-1 win over Portland to start the day and then came back to pull out a 3-2 win over Oregon with a couple key third set wins making the difference.
The Huskies got back the services of four players who were at the USA National Team Open Tryout last week in Kara Bajema, Samantha Drechsel, Lauren Sanders, and Avie Niece.
"The four girls that didn't play last weekend they all made improvements throughout the day," said Head Coach Steve Whitaker. "It's kind of a crash course but they all got better and it was pretty cool to see. It came down to D.J. and Kris in the third set that got us the match against Oregon. It was pretty high level volleyball that they were playing so it was pretty neat to see."
In the first match against the Pilots, the Huskies rolled out three new teams in the top three spots in the lineup, and all picked up victories. Destiny Julye played with Kristen Gengenbacher at No. 1 and they beat Portland's Williams/Barker, 21-14, 21-16. Shayne McPherson and Kara Bajema teamed for the first time at No. 2 and after a first set loss, they rallied back to win, 16-21, 21-14, 15-13. Cat McCoy and Samantha Drechsel had a 21-13, 21-14 win at No. 3 over UP's Strong and Brigham.
Portland got a point with a close 21-19, 21-18 win at No. 4 over freshmen Kyra Petersen and Callie Weber. But Emma Calle and Chloe Newton had the most convincing win of the match at No. 5, winning 21-7, 21-13 over Hughes/Reich.
Match 2
Washington's first meeting with the Ducks this season came down to the No. 1 court, where Julye and Gengenbacher pulled away in the final set to beat Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Nuneviller, 21-11, 21-23, 15-8 to clinch the 3-2 win for UW.
Early on UW also had a close three set win as Lauren Sanders played her first ever beach match, teaming with Emma Calle, and they won, 21-12, 19-21, 15-13, over Oregon's Wallace and Ferreira at the No. 5 spot.
"Lauren and Emma they played really steady and in the third set it seemed like they had the momentum and they were learning from each play and did a good job of executing," said Whitaker. "Lauren's passing and her setting is good. That was one of the questions can she pass and set? And she proved that she can. Emma was a good pair with her, playing defense behind Lauren's block."
Avie Niece also got the start at No. 4 teaming with Weber, though they dropped a 21-15, 21-15 decision to UO's Page/Raskie. The Ducks also had a 21-16, 21-19 win at No. 3 over McCoy and Drechsel, but the third Husky point came at No. 2 where McPherson and Bajema rolled to a 21-13, 21-13 win over Silberger-Franek and Mattoon of Oregon.
Tomorrow the Huskies will face a strong Boise State squad at 10 a.m. back at Frenchman's Bar Park.
"We have a really tough match tomorrow," Whitaker said. "Boise State did a really good job and handled Oregon right before we played Oregon and they have some really good pieces on their team. They're going to test us in every way."
