Ward, Burgmann Give UW Its First Weekly Honors Sweep Since 2006
March 05, 2019 | Baseball
For the first time since 2006, the Washington Baseball team has swept Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. Josh Burgmann won the Conference's weekly honor for pitchers while Braiden Ward was named player of the week.
The last time a pair of Huskies were honored in the same week was April 11, 2006 when Zach Clem and pitcher Tim Lincecum both won the award.
Burgmann, a redshirt-sophomore from Nanaimo, B.C., reached double digits in strikeouts on Sunday for the second-consecutive game, fanning 10 Cal Poly batters over eight innings. Washington shutout the Mustangs, 5-0, to earn a series sweep and sixth-straight victory overall.
In his previous outing, Burgmann threw a seven-inning complete game with 11 strikeouts in an 11-1 win over Northern Colorado. On Sunday, he was set to attempt to record his second-consecutive complete game but did not come out for the ninth inning after his offense scored four runs in the eighth to break open a 1-0 game.
Burgmann settled for an eight-inning outing, throwing 103 pitches. He allowed three singles and a walk as only two Mustang runners reached as far as second base on the afternoon. He is 2-0 on the season with a 0.90 earned run average and Pac-12 leading 26 strikeouts.
Ward, a sophomore centerfielder from Merced, Calif., had a huge week for the Huskies, recording six steals – including three on both Saturday and Sunday. From his lead-off spot in the lineup, Ward had an on-base percentage of .600 and was 5 for 11 (.455) at the plate with a triple, double, two runs batted in and four runs scored.
During Washington's six-game hit streak, Ward is hitting .522 (12 for 23), and has scored 12 runs and stolen 11 bases. He also has four doubles, two triples and five RBI in those six games. He has reached base at least twice each game during the six-game stretch and has a .633 ob% and 1.503 OPS.
It marks the 66th time Washington has earned Player of the Week honors and the 47th time a Husky has been honored as Pitcher of the Week.
