Julye, Gengenbacher Get No. 1 Wins Against Arizona
March 29, 2019 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – Seniors Destiny Julye and Kristen Gengenbacher enjoyed their time in the sun on the shores of Alki Beach today but despite their two victories at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, 14th-ranked Arizona was able to hold off the Washington Beach Volleyball team in a double-header today, taking the first match, 3-2, then winning the second, 4-1.
The weather did its part as the teams enjoyed a windless sunny day out at Alki in the only home date on the Husky beach schedule. The Dawgs (6-6) were right with the ranked Wildcats (13-4) in both matches, but Washington was 0-4 in third sets over the two matches and that turned the tide in favor of Arizona, which made its first trip to Seattle for a beach match.
Julye and Gengenbacher did not drop a set in their two matches at No. 1 against Olivia Hallaran and Mia Mason. In the first match, they earned a 21-14, 21-17 victory, and the rematch went down by a 21-11, 21-18 count.
Head Coach Steve Whitaker said of his top pair, "It was cool to see them change some strategies as the game developed. If something wasn't working they adapted in both matches it seems, so I'm proud of that."
The Nos. 4 and 5 matches were played to completion before the top three matches started. Both times the Wildcats took 2-0 leads, as they won in straight sets at No. 4 each time, and also in each match Arizona lost the first set at No. 5 but came back to win in three sets.
In the first match, Emma Calle and Callie Weber won set one, 21-15, over Parker/Havili at No. 5, but the Wildcats pulled out a 21-19 second set and then won 15-11. Arizona then clinced the win with a straight-set victory at No. 3. Washington got its second point from Kara Bajema and Shayne McPherson who won, 21-18, 21-18, at No. 2 over Baham and Burling.
Arizona rallied again for the key third set win at No. 5 in the second match, this time Parker and Havili rallied against Weber and Chloe Newton, 18-21, 21-16, 15-12.
Down 0-2, the Huskies proceeded to win the first sets on courts one, two, and three to set themselves up well for a rally. But only Julye and Gengenbacher were able to close out their win. Bajema and McPherson fell in three sets, 19-21, 21-13, 15-12, and Cat McCoy and Samantha Drechsel came up just short at the No. 3 spot against Anselmo/Rigdon, 17-21, 21-17, 15-7.
"Shayne and Kara won one and lost one, but I like the way they're playing together," Whitaker said. "They feed off each other. It looked like we got a little gassed at the end, but I'm really proud of them, and how Kara has taken to the sand now, she's a bigger personality on the sand this year by far.
"We keep preaching just one-percent better each day, and I thought we did that today, so even though the losses happened, we can look at that as a positive."
