Dawgs Get Closer But Not Over The Top
April 06, 2019 | Beach Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. – Washington Beach Volleyball was a set away from its first ranked win of the season today, but that last set went the way of 19th-ranked Stanford, as the Cardinal pulled out a 3-2 win over the Huskies at Stanford Beach Stadium. The tough but encouraging loss followed another competitive defeat for the Dawgs at the hands of No. 1-ranked and undefeated UCLA on the first day of the Pac-12 North Invitational.
Washington (6-8) has played several close matches now against ranked Pac-12 squads but will keep looking to get over the hump. The match against Stanford was tied at 2-2 and the Dawgs had their best shot to clinch in the second set of the No. 3 pairs match. Cat McCoy and Samantha Drechsel had won a marathon first set, 26-24, and were right at the verge of closing out the match in two, but Stanford's Dailey and Smith won the second set, 22-20, and then pulled away in the third set, 15-6, to clinch the 3-2 victory for the Cardinal.
The Huskies got points from the top and bottom of the lineup against Stanford. Destiny Julye and Kristen Gengenbacher had a 21-19, 21-13 win over Stanford's top pair of Ashkinos/Ekstrom. Then the duo of Chloe Newton and Callie Weber pulled out a three-setter at No. 5, 23-21, 16-21, 15-11.
In the first match against the Bruins, the Huskies pushed three sets into extra points but the Bruins came out on top in all three. Kara Bajema and Shayne McPherson played a great match at No. 2 against the excellent UCLA No. 2 of Justine/Sponcil, falling just short, 22-20, 23-21. At the No. 4 spot, Kyra Petersen and Avie Niece teamed up today and played well together, dropping a 21-16, 22-20 decision to Monkhouse/Simo. The McNamara twins won the No. 1 match against Julye and Gengenbacher by a 21-16, 21-15 count.
The Huskies have two more chances for a big signature win tomorrow against No. 2 USC and No. 12 California.
