Washington Falls in Close Match at Pepperdine
March 24, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. --- Despite putting up an impressive fight, Washington dropped a non-conference match at Pepperdine Sunday afternoon in a contest much closer than the final score of 4-0 would imply.
Washington (5-10 overall) dropped a pair of excruciatingly close matches to the Waves (6-8) including one in the tiebreaker in losing the doubles point. Then after a pair of straight-set singles losses, the Huskies had two matches in tiebreaker and were leading in one other when the match ended.
The Waves were able to pull out the doubles point by winning a pair of extremely close matches at #2 and #3 doubles. Jack Davis and Piers Foley easily pulled out the win at #1 doubles, breaking a 3-3 tie by winning the final three games for a 6-3 victory. Ewen Lumsden and Adam Torocsik battled hard at #3 doubles, matching their Pepperdine opponents point for point. With the score tied at 5-5, the Waves were able to break the Huskies, then held on for a 7-5 win.
With the doubles point still up for grabs, the #2 team of Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer fought back from a 5-3 hole to tie things at 5-5, then after dropping the next game, forced the tiebreaker after tying it again at 6-6. But the Waves jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker and won the doubles point with a 7-2 victory.
Pepperdine took the first two points in singles play with Foley losing 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 and Davis falling 7-5, 6-3. Ernesto Turegano rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the first set to force a tiebreaker in the second. Despite holding a pair of set points, he was unable to pull out the win, falling 10-8 in the tiebreaker. That victory by the Waves would give them the match, with the rest of the singles matches ending.
Lumsden, who had won his first set 6-2 at No. 5, was leading 5-2 prior to those matches becoming final, but was battling through a tiebreaker in the second set when the match ended. He held a 5-3 lead when the match ended. Sebastian Hawken had split the first two sets at No. 6, winning 6-3 before losing 6-1. He held a 3-2 lead in the third when the match concluded.
Sommer looked sharp in his match at No. 1, twice rallying from big deficits. In the first set, he trailed 4-1, but won the next five games to take the set 6-4. He again trailed big at 5-2 in the second set, before rallying back to tie it at 5-5 and was down 6-5, but up 40-15 when the match ended.
Washington closes out its short trip to Southern California on Tuesday, taking on UC Santa Barbara (7-5) at 11:00 a.m.
