Eight-Run Fifth Inning Pushes UW To 9-5 Opening Win
February 16, 2019 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – The Husky Baseball team had to wait an extra day to jump start their 2019 season after rain canceled opening day on Friday, and once game one of their double-header against No. 25 UC Irvine began, they had to wait until the fifth inning to awaken their bats from an off-season slumber. But all the waiting proved to be worth it, as the Huskies erupted for eight runs in the fifth and held on for a 9-5 win over UCI in game one of a double header at Cicerrone Field at Anteater Ballpark on Saturday.
UC Irvine would jump out to an early 3-0 lead with runs in each of the first three innings before Washington's bats came to life. Anteaters' starter Andre Pallante, coming off a 10-1, 1.60 ERA campaign as a sophomore, looked every bit the part of a preseason All-American as he set down the first 12 Huskies down in order to start the game. But the Huskies would send 14 batters to the plate in the fifth, smack two home runs and chase Pallante from the game before the fifth inning would end.
The Huskies got on the board for the first time in 2019 on Joe Wainhouse's lead-off home. He smashed a 2-2 pitch from Pallante (0-1) over the fence in centerfield for his 20th career home run that cut UCI's lead to 3-1. Wainhouse's homer seemingly awoke the UW bats as five of his teammates would follow by reaching via a hit in the inning, including a three-run homer by Nick Kahle.
Schiffer followed Wainhouse with a single and scored on Connor Blair's first hit as a Husky, a screaming double. Junior third baseman Ben Baird tied the score, 3-3, with a single up the middle and senior Mason Cerrillo gave the Huskies their first lead, 4-3, with a sacrifice fly.
Kahle followed Cerrillo by hitting an 0-1 offering from Pallante over the left-field fence for a three-run shot that gave the Huskies a 7-3 Husky lead. Washington would tack on a final run in the inning on an error by the shortstop Christian Koss that allowed Wainhouse to score, who singled earlier during his second at bat of the inning.
Up 8-3, the Huskies' bullpen went to work on a good-hitting Anteaters' lineup. Freshman David Rhodes (1-0) threw two scoreless innings in his first college game to pick up the win for the Huskies. Sophomore Stevie Emanuels relieved Rhodes and kept UCI at bay until he was touched for a pair of eighth inning runs. He struck out five over 3 1/3 innings before handing the ball over to Jack Enger with one on and one out in the ninth.
The Huskies would add an insurance run in the ninth after Braiden Ward led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball to make it 9-5 in UW's favor.
Enger, a sophomore from Bellevue, Wash., would induce a game-ending double play to secure the win for the Huskies.
Washington outhit Irvine, 10-7, with Wainhouse and Blair each getting a pair of hits.
