Huskies Earn Regional Coaching Staff Of The Year
December 06, 2019 | Women's Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Washington's coaching staff of Lesle Gallimore, Amy Griffin, Nikki Washington, and Gabriela Quiggle were named the Regional Coaching Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches. The award comes after the Huskies finished third in the Pac-12 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, going 12-7-2 overall in the final seasons of Gallimore's and Griffin's Husky tenures.
This is the first time that Washington has earned Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. Gallimore also earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year this season, becoming the fifth coach ever to win that award multiple times after also doing so in 2000. The Staff of the Year award comes after a number of accolades, including two All-Pac-12 awards and two All-Region awards for Huskies Kaylene Pang and Summer Yates.
In Gallimore's 26th and final season as the Huskies' head coach, Washington returned to the postseason for the first time since 2015, advancing to the second round as a national #4 seed. The Huskies were picked to finished tenth in the Pac-12 but went 7-4-0, their second-most Pac-12 wins ever, to finish third in the conference. Washington gave up a lead only twice all season and lost by multiple goals just three times. Washington went 6-2-0 against ranked teams and shutout nine opponents.
This was the 15th postseason trip in Husky history, all with Gallimore at the helm. Washington has advanced to at least the second round ten times. This was the third consecutive season that Washington has improved its Pac-12 record, with Gallimore, Griffin, and Nikki Washington on the staff for all three of those years.
Washington's men's soccer coaches also earned Regional Coaching Staff of the Year, making the Huskies the only athletic department in the country to have both their men's and women's soccer programs earn that award this season.
With the Regional award under their belt, Washington's coaching staff will now be eligible for the National Coaching Staff of the Year award. That award is voted on by other United Soccer Coaches members and will be announced later this month.
