UW Wins Championship & JV Eights At 40th Head Of The Lake
November 03, 2019 | Women's Rowing
SEATTLE – The Washington women's rowing team closed out its fall season Sunday with a pair of victories in the 40th Head of the Lake Regatta, winning the championship women's eight and the collegiate JV eight competitions.
The 40th annual Head of the Lake, co-hosted by the UW and Lake Washington Rowing Club, featured a total of 467 entries from 83 colleges, schools and clubs, competing in 42 race categories for juniors, masters and college athletes. The race started on Lake Union, traveled under the Ship Canal Bridge through Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut and finished on Lake Washington, near the UW's Conibear Shellhouse.
"Spirits were high and the racing was really competitive," UW women's coach Yasmin Farooq said. "The weather was really spectacular, so what a fun way to end the season."
Washington entered two crews in the featured women's race, the championship women's eight, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells, with the two shells meant to be roughly equal. The crew coxed by Sachi Yamamoto and stroked by McKenna Bryant won the race in a time of 17:04.773. The other Husky crew, coxed by Maddy Cope and stroked by Teal Cohen, took second with a time of 17:22.496.
A third UW women's eight won its race, the women's collegiate JV 8+, with a time of 18:04.602, 44 seconds ahead of second-place Seattle Pacific.
The only other Husky woman to compete Sunday morning was junior Sofia Asoumanaki, who was the lone UW representative in the women's single sculls, the Lucy Pocock Stillwell Cup. In a field with other international rowers, Asoumanaki finished in third place, with a time of 21:41.979.
"It's the perfect ending to the fall season," Farooq concluded. "Home waters and rowing through the Cut with a lot of Husky fans. It really is a celebration of our sport and it's a great environment for our team and our community."
