Bodily Leads Huskies Past Boston College, 2-0
November 24, 2019 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Blake Bodily continued his hot play, netting his 11th goal of the season and assisting on Washington's other goal in a 2-0 victory over Boston College in an NCAA Tournament second-round match Sunday evening at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The No. 6 seeded Huskies improve to 16-3-0 on the season and move into the third round of the tournament where they will face off against the No. 11 seed Marshall, which defeated West Virginia 2-1 earlier in the day. The start time for the match will be announced on Monday.
Washington's 16 victories equals the most in a season since winning 17 in 1983. The Huskies also won 16 matches in 2013, reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals that season, and in 1998.
Bodily scored his team-best 11th goal of the season to get the Huskies on the board in the 25th minute. Lucas Meek started the play, sending a quick ball toward the end line where Charlie Ostrem ran onto it and sent it toward the goal where Bodily sent it in from just inside the six-yard box.
He would pick up an assist on the Washington insurance tally just under six minutes later. Bodily popped his first attempt at a pass straight up in the air but settled on it just inside the box and headed it back toward Jaret Townsend. The senior would slip a quick strike past the netminder to make it 2-0. Townsend's tally was his sixth of the season and fourth in his last eight matches.
Bodily's goal was his seventh in as many matches and gives him 11 on the season, the most by a Husky in 12 years—since Ely Allen tallied 12 in 2007. His 28 points (11g, 6a) are also the best in 13 years dating back to when Kevin Forrest recorded 33 in 2006.
Meek recorded his sixth assist this season to go along with six goals, with all six helpers coming over the last eight matches after scoring six goals over a seven-match stretch earlier this season.
Washington looked ready to add to its tally numerous times over the final 59 minutes of the contest, but were thwarted by outstanding work from Boston College's netminder Christian Garner, who made six incredible saves the rest of the way. The Huskies put up 24 shots including eight on goal to Boston College's five and three on frame.
"It was a great performance for us, and I couldn't be happier," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "It was as nervous of a 2-0 result as you can get though, because I felt like we should have put it away. But credit to their goalkeeper who really kept it in it. At 2-0, you are one mistake away from really sweating. It was a very good performance, but it wasn't a clinical performance."
Sam Fowler picked up his seventh shutout and improved to 10-1-0 on the season with his three-save performance. It was Washington's 12th shutout of the season overall as the Huskies have now allowed fewer goals (11) than total shutouts.
Washington improves to 3-0-1 in second-round matches under Jamie Clark and improve to 4-1-1 in second-round matches after a first-round bye all-time. While the Huskies improve to 11-7-2 in home playoff games all-time, the victory was the first home playoff win for the Huskies since 2016 after bowing out at home the last two seasons.
