Huskies Close Out Regular Season at Oregon State with Pac-12 Title on the Line
November 13, 2019 | Men's Soccer
No. 6 Washington (14-3-0, 7-2-0 Pac-12) closes out the regular season on Friday, traveling to Corvallis to face Oregon State (8-5-2, 5-2-2 Pac-12) at 6:00 p.m. The match will not be available to watch or stream, but live stats will be available on gohuskies.com. The Pac-12 title will be decided on Friday night with the Huskies needing to win to clinch the title outright.
Quick Strikes
Pac-12 Title Chances
The Pac-12 title race comes down to the last weekend with Washington continuing to control its own destiny as the Huskies simply need to beat Oregon State to win their third Pac-12 Championship. UW can also clinch the title on Thursday if Cal knocks off Stanford in Palo Alto. A tie between Cal and Stanford would give Washington at least a share of the conference crown and mean UW would only need a tie or win at OSU to take the Pac-12 title outright.
The Oregon State Beavers At A Glance
The Beavers have moved back into the NCAA Tournament picture by going 3-0-1 over their last four matches including playing to a scoreless draw against Stanford on Thursday, then winning a 1-0 match in overtime against Cal on Sunday. Oregon State has been solid at home this year, especially in conference play, posting a 10-match undefeated streak in Pac-12 play dating back to last year.
Junior midfielder Joel Walker leads the team with six goals and four assists while sophomore Adrian Crespo adds four goals and has seven assists on the season. In goal, sophomore Adrian Hernandez is 8-5-2 with five shutouts and a 1.02 goals against average playing every minute in goal for the Beavers. He has posted three shutouts in the last four matches.
Series History vs. Oregon State
Washington holds a 42-15-4 advantage in the all-time series including an 18-8-4 mark in matches in Corvallis. The Beavers have won the last two matches between the two at home, though the Huskies were 4-0-1 in their last five at Oregon State. Washington has won two-straight matches in the series–both in Seattle, winning 2-1 earlier this season and 2-0 to close out the 2018 season.
The last time the Huskies won the Pac-12 title was in 2013. That season, Washington had to pull out a win at Oregon State to clinch the title and they did, beating the Beavers 1-0.
Shutout Central
The Huskies have posted 11 shutouts through 17 matches this season, which is the third-best shutout percentage (.647) in the NCAA. In addition, UW ranks sixth in team goals against average at 0.583. Dating back to last season, the Huskies have cleansheets in 16 of their last 22 matches recording a 0.45 goals against average over that stretch (10 goals in 2,015 minutes). Washington has more shutouts (11) than goals allowed on the season (10).
Going Streaking!
Washington has lost just three games over its last 22 matches (18-3-1) dating back to last season. The Huskies saw a 10-match winning streak snapped last week. It had been the longest streak since UW won 10-straight matches at the end of the 1999 season.
In the Rankings ...
Washington enters the week ranked No. 6 in the latest NCAA/United Soccer Coaches poll. The Huskies had been ranked atop the NCAA/USC poll for three-straight weeks earlier this year, marking the first time in program history UW has been ranked No. 1 three weeks in a season. It's a pretty remarkable feat considering the Huskies were unranked to start the season.
Bodily Repeats as Pac-12 Player of the Week
Junior midfielder Blake Bodily earned back-to-back Pac-12 Player of the Week awards after earning his second-straight honor on Oct. 29. Bodily became the Huskies' first player to win the award in back-to-back weeks after tallying three goals in two matches in Southern California. In the previous week, Bodily assisted on the match-winner and scoring a goal of his own in the Huskies' 4-0 win over Gonzaga. It was the first time Bodily earned a Pac-12 Player of the Week honor. He has four goals over his last three matches and has tallied a point in 10 of 13 matches this season.
Meek's STILL A Goal-Scoring Machine!
Redshirt sophomore Lucas Meek has been a big key to the offense this year, scoring six goals on the season despite playing in just 588 minutes over 15 matches, including an impressive five-match goal streak earlier in the year. In addition, five of those goals have been match-winners, which ranks second in the NCAA lead in that category. Lately, Meek has been adding to his assist total, recording four helpers over his last six matches.
Meek redshirted his first year, played three minutes at the end of one match last year as a freshman, and was down on the depth chart to start the year this season. Meek's first action in 2019 came in mop-up time in a 4-0 win over San Francisco. He came on in the 41st minute at No. 16 Michigan State, then scored two minutes later and didn't play again in the second half. He did not play at Michigan, but then came in late in the match at CSUN and scored UW's only goal in the 80th minute. Meek scored at Seattle, at home vs San Diego State and just 47 seconds into the match against UCLA.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington continues to find success when scoring the first goal of the match. Going back to last season, the Huskies are 25-2-0 when scoring the match's first goal. This year, UW is 13-1-0 when scoring first with the lone loss coming against California with the Huskies leading 2-1 at halftime before falling 3-2.
Spread The Wealth
The Huskies have scored 35 goals in 17 matches thus far with 11 different players finding the back of the net. Blake Bodily leads the way with nine goals, with Lucas Meek adding six. Jaret Townsend and Gio Miglietti have each scored a career-best five goals. Meanwhile, 16 different players have tallied a point, led by Bodily with 23 (9g, 5a), Meek with 16 (6g, 4a) and Miglietti with 12 (5g, 2a).
That Offense!
Washington's offense has been clicking throughout the season, scoring 35 goals in 17 matches to lead the Pac-12 and rank 22nd in the NCAA in scoring offense (2.06 goals per match). The Huskies also rank 29th nationally in assists per game (1.94) and 30th in total points (103).
Home Bodies
The Huskies are 7-2-0 this season, outscoring opponents 22-6. Dating back to last season, the Huskies are 11-2-1 in their last 14 home matches, allowing just six goals over that stretch of 1,190 minutes. Washington saw its 12-match home unbeaten streak come to an end last week. That streak had been its longest since a 13-match streak (11-0-2) spanning 2012-13.
Clark Wins #150
UW Head Coach Jamie Clark picked up his 150th career victory with Washington's 4-0 win over Gonzaga on Oct. 16. In 13 seasons, Clark is 152-58-23, with this year being the 12th season with 12+ victories. Clark's .702 career winning percentage is the sixth-best among active NCAA DI coaches. Earlier this year, Clark picked up his 100th win at UW in a 2-1 win over No. 18 Denver. With the victory, he became the third coach in program history with at least 100 wins (Dean Wurzberger 220, Mike Ryan 105), holding a 112-43-20 record in nine seasons on Montlake.
Fowler in Goal
Freshman goalie Sam Fowler suffered his first collegiate loss last week, but not before posting an impressive 8-0-0 record to start his UW career. Despite the setback, Fowler still holds a 0.45 goals against average this season, which is the fourth-best mark in the NCAA this season. Fowler earned his first college start in UW's 4-0 victory over San Francisco, becoming just the second freshman to start in goal for the Huskies since 2002. The only other during that stretch was Spencer Richey (2010)–the starting goalkeeper for FC Cincinnati (MLS)–who had six shutouts his first year at UW.
Bodily Named CSN National Player of the Week
Junior Blake Bodily had a fantastic trip to the Bay area, assisting on the golden goal at Stanford before scoring the lone goal in Washington's win at California. For that, he was named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week for the week ending October 6.
Bodily was been solid all season, recording a point in 11 of the 15 matches he has played, amassing nine goals and five assists. Bodily has earned Pac-12 First Team recognition each of the two seasons he has played after being named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2017.
Bodily Rakes In The Pre-Season Honors
Bodily was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list to start the year (awarded to the top college soccer player), becoming the first Husky since Cristian Roldan to earn that honor. In addition, Bodily was a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and earned preseason All-America honors from Top Drawer Soccer (3rd Team) and College Soccer News (2nd Team).
Preseason All-Pac-12 Coaches Picks
The Huskies saw three players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team: junior Blake Bodily and sophomores Ethan Bartlow and Dylan Teves. In addition, UW was picked to finish second by the Pac-12 coaches, six points behind Stanford and two points ahead of Oregon State.
Soto Earns Freshman Honors
Midfielder Christian Soto was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Best Freshman XI Team prior to the season and recently was named #5 on TDS' list of the Top 100 Freshman in DI men's soccer. Soto comes to UW after playing for Crossfire FC with Husky teammates Charlie Ostrem and Ethan Bartlow and earned a USBNT call-up with the U17 National Team Camp in 2016. He has appeared in all 17 matches, making 12 starts and has four assists on the year.
Road Trip Success
Overall, the Huskies are 7-1-0 on the road this season, outscoring opponents 13-4 in those matches. Washington is a perfect 4-0-0 in Pac-12 road games this year and have outscored opponents 7-1. The Huskies haven't finished above .500 on the road since 2016 with their one loss being the fewest road losses since 2013.
Washington wrapped up its first road trip of the year with a 3-1-0 record with a pair of wins in Michigan and a commanding 3-0 win over crosstown rival Seattle U. The four-game trip is the longest since 2012 when UW played five-straight away from home.
Bartlow on Fire
Sophomore center back Ethan Bartlow picked up his third goal of the season vs Portland, scoring off a free kick in the 81st minute. That goal along with his strong work along the UW backline earned him Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 29.
French Records His First Goal
At Michigan, the Huskies' lone goal came from redshirt junior Kasey French, who joined the rush from his right back position, finishing with a great shot to the far post. French has been a mainstay on defense, amassing 1100 minutes over the last two years, but got his first goal in 31 collegiate matches.
Teves Earns National Recognition
Sophomore Dylan Teves earned an impressive honor this week, being named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Sept. 1. Teves, who was a preseason All-Pac-12 pick, recorded assists on both of Washington's goals in its 2-1 win over Denver on Aug. 30. The sophomore appeared in all but one match for the Huskies as a true freshman in 2018, scoring five goals with two assists.
Logan/French on National Teams of the Week
Washington saw a pair of players earn National Team of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 8. Redshirt junior Bryce Logan made eight saves and posted a pair of cleansheets to lead the Huskies to wins at Michigan State and Michigan. For his effort, Logan was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Fellow redshirt junior Kasey French earned Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week honors after scoring his first collegiate goal–the match-winner–at Michigan. The stalwart on defense for the Huskies tallied his first goal with a brilliant finish to lead UW to the key road win.
Huskies Place Three on CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team
Senior John Magnus, redshirt junior Kasey French and redshirt sophomore Lucas Meek earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 honors as the Huskies placed three players on the 12-man team which recognizes student-athletes for their work on and off the field.
For French, it was his third-straight year earning the prestigious honor after posting a 3.88 cumulative GPA while pursuing an incredible double-major in mathematics and physics at Washington. Magnus is close to wrapping up his UW career with an equally impressive 3.73 GPA while working toward a computer science degree with a minor in Mathematics. Meek also earned the honor for the first time, recording a 3.59 GPA through his first two years in pursuit of a business degree at Washington.
