SEATTLE - Three weeks remain in the regular season and the conference race is at full speed. Every match for the 13th-ranked Huskies is a big one and this week is no exception. Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena, Washington (19-5, 10-4 Pac-12) hosts a Colorado squad that has won three of its past four and is trying to keep its postseason hopes alive, and then Sunday the Huskies host 15th-ranked Utah which is tied with UW at 10-4 and beat the Huskies the first time around in Salt Lake City.
Friday night's match will get underway at 8 p.m. and Sunday's match is set for a 1 p.m. first serve. Only Friday's match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Sunday will be live stream only.
Despite two big road wins at the Oregon schools last week, the Huskies went from seventh to ninth in the NCAA RPI. They remain the second-highest Pac-12 school in RPI with Utah third at 16th. Colorado ranks 61st in RPI and will need to climb up into the top-50 to have a good shot at an at-large bid.
The Huskies and Utes are tied with California and Washington State at 10-4 in league play, all two games behind Stanford which is 12-2.
Colorado (11-13) was 0-10 through the first half of Pac-12 play but is 3-1 so far in the second half to reignite its postseason hopes. The Buffs started with wins over the Arizona schools but then got a big road upset over UCLA last week before losing a close three-setter to USC in their last match. Senior Justine Spann ranks fifth in the Pac-12 in points per set with 4.09, including 3.65 kills per set and 0.25 aces per set. Jenna Ewert is sixth in conference matches with 9.84 assists per set and senior Rachel Whipple is third in digs with 4.51 per set. The Huskies won the first meeting this year in four sets, hitting .288 and holding Colorado to .155 with a big 8-1 edge in aces and 17.5 team blocks, 10 from Lauren Sanders.
Utah has won four in a row and defeated both USC and UCLA on the road last week to get to 18-7 overall on the year. In league play, the Utes rank third in attack percentage, hitting .273, and are allowing a .237 rate for opponents. Utah is fifth in aces with 1.21 per set. Junior Dani Drews is third in the Pac-12 with 4.66 kills per set and sixth in aces with 0.28, while junior Kenzie Koerber adds 3.08 kills per set and hits .279. Senior middle Berkeley Oblad is hitting .305 with 2.49 kills per set. Sophomore setter Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres leads the conference in assists per set at 11.69. Utah has won the last three matches against the Huskies, the longest skid for UW against any conference foe. The Utes hit a scorching .414 to beat the Huskies in four sets in the first meeting on Oct. 25 with a 6-1 edge in aces.
