Dawgs in Sixth After Day One at Maridoe Intercollegiate
October 06, 2019 | Men's Golf
CARROLLTON, Texas – The No. 2 University of Washington men's golf team currently sits in sixth place following round one of the Maridoe Intercollegiate on Sunday as the Dawgs shot a 15-over 303 on the difficult Maridoe Golf Club course. Washington has two players in the top 25 and were led by junior Jan Schneider who is tied for 15th. The three-day tournament features 18 holes each day on the par-72, 7,554 yard course.
"We hit a lot of good shots today but also hit too many bad ones," said head coach Alan Murray. "Our back nine wasn't great but this tournament is 54 holes and with windy conditions, it's a very tough course. It's meant to be windy again tomorrow but I think today was a good experience for us. We're looking forward to getting back on the course tomorrow and continuing to compete."
Schneider finished at 2-over 74 for his tie at 15th, which is six strokes off the lead. Only three players shot under par during round one on the tough Maridoe course. Just one stroke behind him was freshman Bo Peng who shot a 3-over 75 to tie for 21st. The newcomer was 1-under on the front nine with a clean scorecard with a birdie coming on hole nine.
Sophomore Paul Margolis posted a 4-over 76 and was leading the field after his front nine as he recorded four birdies. His back nine started with a triple but the sophomore made par on five of his next eight holes to finish at 4-over.
Junior Noah Woolsey is tied for 38th at 6-over 78 alongside freshman Petr Hruby, who is playing as an individual, while senior Henry Lee rounds out the UW lineup at 8-over 80 which is tied for 53rd.
Washington tees off on Monday alongside Texas A&M and New Mexico at 6:30 a.m. PT for 18 holes.
