Purple Rallies For 3-1 Win In World Series Opener
October 25, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Christian Jones homered and Davis Delorefice doubled in two runs to lead a fifth-inning rally for the Purple squad in game one of the Purple and Gold World Series at Husky Ballpark on Friday.
Karl Koerper hit a third-inning solo home run to give the Gold team an early one-run lead, but the veteran Purple team had the big inning in the fifth to win the game, 3-1.
Jones led off the fifth with a solo shot off Cole Galvagno that sailed over the right-field wall. The Huskies would then put two runners on via a single and hit batter, setting the table for the junior college transfer, Delorefice. With two outs, he skied a pitch from Koerper into the dark, night sky that centerfielder Cole Miller never saw. The ball fell harmlessly to the ground for a game-changing, two-run double.
Jones and Delorefice were both 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Purple team. Freshman Dalton Chandler was 2-for-3 to lead the Gold squad.
Jack DeCooman struck out the side in the seventh to hammer down the save.
Dylan Lamb wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth inning to pick up the win for the Purple squad.
The two teams meet in game two on Saturday with first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
