LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Washington women's golf team currently sits in second after the first round of the Cardinal Cup on Friday as it recorded a 7-over 295. The Dawgs are just three strokes off the team lead, held by Campbell (+4). Senior Alice Duan had Washington's best round on Friday as she is tied for seventh at even-par 72.
"We had a great start today, making the turn at 1-under on a windy course," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "On the back nine, we had a couple of errors that were costly for us. I was overall pleased with our decision making today and their ability to focus on what they can control. Outside of the wind, it was cold which can be frustrating, but again, I was proud of them focusing on the right things and playing through it."
Despite opening with a bogey on her first hole, Duan responded with a birdie on the third and went on to record four more en route to her even-par 72. Her five birdies on the day were tied for the second-most during round one out of the 95-player field.
Senior Karen Miyamoto was just behind Duan, as she posted a 1-over 73 to tie for 11th. Miyamoto opened the day with a great front nine, going clean with one birdie to make the turn at 1-under. She only posted two blemishes on the back nine to turn in a 1-over. Her 15 pars during round one tied for the most on the day, alongside teammates Brittany Kwon and Martha Lewis.
Kwon and Lewis are both tied for 25th after they turned in scorecards of 3-over 75. Freshman Winnie Ng is tied for 36th at 4-over 76.
The Huskies get back on the course for round two on Saturday at 7 a.m. PT.
