SEATTLE – The University of Washington men's golf team returns to the links to open the spring season this week at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the par-71, 7,292 yard Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The 54-hole, five-count-four event begins Monday, Jan. 28 with 36 holes of stroke play followed by 18 holes on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
THE FIELD: Washington will be joined by 15 other teams in Arizona; Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Denver, Iowa State, LMU, Long Beach State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, St. Mary's Texas A&M, University of Arkansas-Little Rock, UCLA, UTEP and UTSA.
THE LINEUP: The Huskies will play Noah Woolsey, Jan Schneider, Paul Margolis, Henry Lee and Padraic Sim.
FALL RECAP: The Huskies' fall schedule featured a very competitive slate playing on impressive courses across the country against some of the top teams in the nation. After winning the Husky Invitational, Washington went to Fort Worth for the Nike Collegiate Invite which featured nine teams in the top 25. UW then headed to championship course Isleworth Country Club for the Tavistock Collegiate before competing at the Ka'Anapali Collegiate in Hawaii.
NEW ADDITIONS: Washington added a pair of signees for next season during the break as Bo Peng and Petr Hruby signed letters of intent. Hruby, from the Czaech Republic, has represented his country on numerous occasions and after spending time at Bishop Gates Golf Academy, earned a handful of top finishes at amateur events. Peng comes from Lake Mary, Florida but is originally from Nanjing, China. He posted numerous top finishes on the AGJA circuit and took third at the Future Collegians World Tour in 2017.
HUSKY INVITATIONAL SUCCESS: In just its second tournament of the season, Washington took home both the team title and individual crown at the Husky Invitational. The Huskies went 21-over 1086 for a 16-stroke victory after leading all three rounds. Additionally, freshman Robert Moran claimed his first collegiate victory shooting a 1-under 212 for the tournament title. Sophomore Noah Woolsey tied for second while junior Henry Lee tied for ninth.
FRESH ROSTER: Also most half of the Huskies roster for 2018-19 will be new to Montlake this season as the Dawgs welcome freshmen Paul Margolis (Cannes, France), Robert Moran (Dublin, Ireland), Ranveer Grewal (Ludhiana, Indiana) and Padraic Sim (Spanish Fort, Alabama). The newcomers bring a wealth of international experience as three come to Seattle from outside of the country.
WHAT'S BACK: Junior Henry Lee and sophomore Noah Woolsey were second and third on the team in stroke average a year ago and return to lead the Huskies this season. Lee competed in 13 events including earning a spot at the NCAA Pacific Regional alongside Carl Yuan. He averaged a 72.37, posted two top 10 showings with his best being a sixth-place tie while also shooting under par in 15 of his 38 rounds. Woolsey averaged 72.91 in his 12 events and finished in the top two of the lineup for UW in six of those outings.
FALL SCHEDULE: Head coach Alan Murray didn't hold back when scheduling the Huskies fall slate as UW will traverse the country and play on some impressive courses against some of the top teams in the country. Along with the first tournament in Minnesota, which featured eight teams that competed at the NCAA Championships a year ago, Washington will play at the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country club in Texas and the Tavistock Collegiate at Isleworth Country Club in Florida. After a two-year hiatus, UW returns to hosting the Husky Invitational and welcoming some of the top teams in the region to the Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Sept. 25-26. Closing the season, the team will play at the Royal Ka'anapali course in Hawaii for the first time.
HUSKIES IN THE PROS: Washington golf alumni have been very visible on the pro circuits this season with C.T. Pan currently sitting 63rd in the FedEx Cup rankings on the PGA Tour. He's posted two top 10 finishes this season with his best coming at the Wyndham Championship where he tied for second. He also tied for fourth at the Dell Technologies Championship. Alex Prugh again earned his PGA Card after solid showings on the Web.Com Tour while Carly Yuan earned his card on the Web.com Tour this year and opened with a tie for 14th in his first event. Corey Pereira has been strong on the Mackenzie Tour, recently winning his first title on the tour at the ATB Financial Classic. Nick Taylor, and eight other former Dawgs are also competing professionally.
