TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Washington men's golf team opened its spring campaign on Monday with two rounds at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Dawgs sit in ninth place with a 5-under 563 (282-280) after 36 holes while sophomore Noah Woolsey is tied for ninth at 4-under. The final 18 holes begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday at Sewailo Golf Club.
"Noah played very well today and nearly had a hole in one but he's been consistent in our tournaments this year and continues to be at the top of our lineup," said head coach Alan Murray. "All of our guys bounced back after a slightly rough start and I wouldn't be surprised if we have a great round tomorrow. This has been a positive week for our group and we just want to finish strong and leave here with some confidence. The hard work we have put in over the break is looking like it is starting to pay off."
Woolsey had UW's top round on the long 36-hole day as he posted a 1-under 70 over his first 18 holes. He opened the tournament with a birdie but had blemishes over two of the next six holes to put him back at 1-over. The sophomore rallied and recorded three more birdies to put at him at 1-under through round one. He added five more birdies with just one bogey in round two to climb 11 spots into a tie for ninth heading into Tuesday's final round.
Sophomore Jan Schneider and Henry Lee each posted 36-hole totals of even-par 142 to finish tied for 34th. Schneider opened with a 1-under 70 and followed with a 1-over 72 while Lee carded back-to-back even par rounds for his score following day one.
Freshman Paul Margolis was the Huskies' fourth scorecard that counted as he posted a 3-over 145. Margolis opened the day with an even par 71 and despite starting his second round going five-over after the first four holes, he responded going 2-under to finish his second round at 3-over 74.
Rounding out the UW crew was freshman Padraic Sim who is tied for 55th at 3-over 145- (74-71). Competing in the Arizona Medalist Individual event, Washington was led by Shamu Bodhidatta who is tied for first at 9-under with rounds of 67 and 68 on the Randolph course.
"It was really great to see how Shamu played today," said Murray. "He has a lot to feel good about after his rounds."
