Washington Finishes Eighth at Arizona Intercollegiate
January 29, 2019 | Men's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Washington men's golf team was led by a pair of top 10 performances en route to finishing eighth overall at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The Huskies improved upon their score each round and tallied a three-round total of 12-under 840 (282-281-277). Sophomore Noah Woolsey and junior Henry Lee each tied for eighth to lead the Dawgs in the opening tournament of the spring season.
"What an unbelievably great score from Henry today," said head coach Alan Murray. "He had six birdies and an eagle with no bogeys but it's not a big surprise because he's a great player. For him to start the spring that way will hopefully give him confidence moving forward. Noah once again was steady like he has been and finished in the top 10 and the rest of the group's scores maybe weren't what they wanted but they all showed improvement. We aren't out there trying to finish eighth but we're definitely heading in the right direction. We've got a couple of weeks back home and we'll use that to work and improve and be ready to get back on the course."
Lee made the biggest move on Tuesday as he climbed 26 spots on the leaderboard thanks to an 8-under 63 in his final round to move his overall score to 8-under 205 (71-71-63). His round was a career-low and the best third round score by a Husky since 2010. Lee had no blemishes on his day, starting clean on his first two holes before recording two birdies on the next three. He then followed that with four more birdies and even recorded an eagle on his 16th hole of the round. It is the third top 10 performance for Lee this season.
Joining him with an 8-under 205, tying for eighth, was Woolsey. The sophomore's 8-under 205 featured rounds of 70-67-68. On Tuesday, Woolsey opened the day with a birdie on his second hole and despite recording a bogey four holes later, he responded well and went on to post three more birdies en route to a 3-under 68 for the day. It is the second top 10 finish of the year for Woolsey.
Sophomore Jan Schneider recorded a 45th place showing as he carded a 2-over 215 (70-72-73). He was followed on the scoreboard by freshman Padraic Sim who tied for 57th at 5-over 218 (74-71-73). Rounding out the UW group was freshman Paul Margolis as he tied for 63rd with a 7-over 220 (71-74-75).
Competing at the Arizona Medalist Individual event, Shamu Bodhidatta tied for third with a 10-under 206 (67-68-71). He was under par in all three rounds and recorded 18 birdies and one eagle over the 54 holes. Ranveer Grewal tied for 24th in the same event with a 2-over 218 (72-74-72) while William Mansfield tied for 31st at 6-over 222 (74-73-75).
The Huskies have just under a month back at home in Seattle to practice before heading to California for the Southwestern Invitational, Feb. 25-26.
