Huskies Fall To Utah State In Consolation Match

AUSTIN, Texas --- The Washington men's tennis team lost to Utah State 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in the consolation match of the ITA kick-off weekend. With the loss on Saturday, the Huskies are now 1-2 on the season.
Washington started out strong earning the doubles point on the third court after each side won a single doubles match. Sophomore Jack Davis and senior Piers Foley won the first doubles match for the Huskies beating Isaac Arturo Arevalo and Jose Carvajal 6-3. Freshman Ewen Lumsden and senior Enzo Sommer lost to Sergiu Bucur and Rithvik Bollipalli 1-6 to force the winner on Court 3 to earn the point.
Freshman Kasper Smith and senior Kawika Lam won the match 7-6 in a back and forth battle against Duro Opacic and Felipe Acosta to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Huskies made one change to the starting lineup in freshman Adam Torocsik, who was slotted in the sixth position making his first career dual singles start.
Sommer, playing in the first spot in the lineup for the third consecutive match, fell to Arevalo 1-6, 3-6 to give Utah State their first point, tying up the match at one.
Foley lost in the second spot to Bucur 1-6, 5-7 to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead with four singles matches remaining.
Davis claimed the lone Husky singles point by beating Duro Opacic 6-4, 6-4 and tying up the overall match again at two points a side.
Torocsik battled in the first set losing in a tiebreaker 6-7, but could not mount a comeback in the second set, losing 2-6.
On the fifth court, senior Sebastian Hawken played in a tightly contested battle but ultimately fell, losing two sets via tiebreaker 6-7, 6-7.
Freshman Ernesto Turegano's match against Felipe Acosta was unfinished due to the match being won by Utah State. Turegano won the first set 6-4, and then dropped the second 6-7.
Texas beat Miami in the championship match 4-0, and will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago.
The Huskies will face Liberty on Friday Feb. 1 at 6 pm in the second home match of the year.
