Huskies Drop Match to No. 8 Teaxs 4-0

AUSTIN, Texas --- The Washington men's tennis team lost to No. 8 Texas 4-0 in the first match of the ITA kick-off weekend on Friday. The Huskies will face the loser of Utah State and Miami in the consolation match on Saturday at 12 pm.
Texas took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point to begin the match. Senior Kawika Lam and freshman Kasper Smith fell to Yuya Ito and Chih Chi Huang 3-6. Senior Enzo Sommer and freshman Ewen Lumsden dropped their match against Collin Markes and Leonardo Telles 3-6. Senior Piers Foley and sophomore Jack Davis were leading 6-5 against the 36th ranked duo in Christian Sigsgaard and Harrison Scott when the doubles point was decided.
The Huskies kept the same six players in the singles lineup as the season opening victory against Portland, although senior Piers Foley was moved into the second spot.
Sommer, playing in the first spot in the lineup dropped his match against the fourth ranked player in the country in Sigsgaard 0-6, 1-6, to give Texas a 2-0 lead.
Lumsden who was in the fourth spot in the lineup fell to Harrison Scott 2-6, 1-6 as Texas took a three-point lead with four singles matches remaining.
The match clinching point was decided by Ito after he defeated Piers Foley 6-3, 6-3 as Texas won the match 4-0.
Davis dropped the first set of his match 4-6, but was up 3-2 in the second when the match was decided. Freshman Ernesto Turegano was behind in his match 2-6, 3-5 when the Longhorns victory was clinched. Senior Sebastian Hawken lost the first set 3-6, and was leading 4-2 in the second when the match was called.
The Huskies will begin the consolation match against the loser of Utah State and Miami at 12 pm PST on Saturday.
