Huskies Defeat Portland 6-1 To Open Season

SEATTLE --- The Washington men's tennis team opened the dual-match season with a 6-1 victory over Portland on Saturday night at Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies took the doubles point at the beginning of the match and never looked back, winning five out of the six singles matches.
Senior Enzo Sommer and freshman Ewen Lumsden breezed through the opening doubles match winning 6-0 against Hann/Neos. It was an impressive showing for the duo who had not previously played a match as partners.
Playing in the number one doubles spot, sophomore Jack Davis and junior Piers Foley clinched the doubles point by beating Oberg/Hibi 6-4.
Senior Kawika Lam and freshman Adam Torocsik were tied 4-4 against Pankin/Yoshida when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles play, the Huskies were dominant from the beginning all throughout the lineup. Senior Sebastian Hawken got the first singles point for UW beating Leo Hibi 6-3, 6-4. Minutes later freshman Ewen Lumsden earned his first career dual-match victory as he defeated Eleftherios Neos 6-3, 6-2. Lumsden's victory put the Huskies up 3-0 in the match.
Playing in the second singles spot, Davis lost to Sema Pankin 3-6, 5-7 to cut the Husky lead to 3-1.
Foley would clinch the fourth point and the match with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Tom Hann, improving his singles record to 6-2 on the year.
Sommer, playing in the first spot in the lineup had his match go to the third set after splitting the first two against Nicklas Oberg 6-3, 2-6. However, in the third set with Sommer up 5-3, Oberg landed awkwardly and retired due to injury.
In the remaining singles match, freshman Ernesto Turegano earned his first carrer dual-match singles win in a hard fought manner, 7-6, 7-6 against Issa Yoshida.
Next up for the Huskies is the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Austin, Texas on Jan. 25. Texas, Utah State, Miami and Washington will all be competing to clinch their ticket to the ITA Indoor National Championships in Chicago.
