GymDawgs Start Season Strong Against Top-Ten Competition
January 12, 2019 | Gymnastics
LINCOLN, Neb. - In the season's first meet, the Washington GymDawgs showed well across all four events, ending the night falling just short of a win against #8 Nebraska, 195.550-195.250. The GymDawgs went over 48.800 on three of the four events. The result puts Washington on the cusp of the nation's top ten, sitting at 12th on average team score.
"We were hoping and prepared for a stronger start," said GymDawgs head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "We battled through first-meet jitters, though there were many moments of excellence too. We're excited that our next meet is such a quick turnaround: it'll be good to get out there again."
Madison Copiak had the highest score of the night for the GymDawgs with her 9.875 on bars. Three GymDawgs had scores of 9.800 or higher on floor, led by Kristyn Hoffa's 9.850. Three more GymDawgs made their competitive collegiate debuts: Geneva Thompson competed on vault, bars, and floor, while Amara Cunningham competed on vault and floor and Brenna Brooks was a part of the lineup for vault, bars, and beam.
