September 08, 2018 | Men's Soccer, Tickets
The University of Washington Men's Soccer team hosts perennial NCAA power and 14th-ranked Akron on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium. Are you on the fence about going to the match? Here are 10 reasons why you should attend:
1 - UW is off to a hot start
The Huskies have opened the season with a 4-1-0 record, posting victories over traditional NCAA powers Maryland and New Mexico as well as scoring wins at Gonzaga and at home against CSUN. The lone Washington loss was an overtime loss at No. 6 Denver—a team which has lost just five times at home over the last seven years. This is the first time since 2015 the Huskies have opened the season with four wins in their first five matches.
2 – Sunday Funday!!
Celebrate Sunday Funday at Husky Soccer Stadium! There will be a pitch-side beer garden available to those ages 21 and up while the first 500 fans will receive a free UW Men's Soccer koozie. In addition, fans who bring their ticket stub from Football's game versus North Dakota on September 8 will receive admission for just $1 at the door.
3 – Top 25 Showdown
Tonight's match is a battle of two teams ranked in various places in the latest soccer polls. The United Soccer Coaches' Poll has Akron at No. 14 with the Huskies checking in at No. 23. The topdrawersoccer.com poll has Washington at No. 9 while Soccer America places the Huskies at No. 13. Regardless of the early-season rankings, the match will be one of the best in college soccer this weekend and likely ones circled by each team when the schedules came out.
4 – Akron is a Top NCAA Program
Akron has been among the NCAA's top programs for the last three decades, reaching the NCAA semifinals four times over the last nine years. Last season, the Zips reached the College Cup Semifinals before falling to eventual champ Stanford. Akron Head Coach Jared Embick has an 80-24-12 record in six seasons as the head coach of the squad, guiding the squad to the NCAA playoffs in each season.
5 – The Huskies' Defense is Special
Washington has posted an impressive mark through the first five matches this season: allowing just 10 shots on goal through the first five matches and just four goals. Led by senior Quentin Pearson and freshman Ethan Bartlow in the middle and sophomores Cole Grimsby and Kasey French on the outside, the Huskies have been making life tough on opposing offenses. Despite facing a number of high-powered offenses, the Huskies have surrendered just 43 shots through five matches with only a quarter of those being on frame.
6 – Scott Menzies Is Off To a Hot start
Senior Scott Menzies has led the team with four goals through the first five matches, already over halfway to his total of seven in 2017. Menzies tallied a brace in the Huskies win at Gonzaga on Monday and leads the team with 16 total shots—10 on goal. The senior now has 13 goals and four assists in his career with six of those goals being match-winners.
7 – Lots and Lots and Lots of Goals
Washington's offense seems to be clicking on all cylinders through the first part of the season, scoring a Pac-12 best 11 goals through the first five matches. The Huskies have scored at least two goals in each contest, running their streak to seven such matches dating back to last season. That's the longest stretch in program history since scoring at least two goals in eight-straight matches from 1991-92 – a streak that could be matched vs Akron on Sunday.
8 – 12 Huskies Have Already Recorded at Least One Point
The Huskies' offensive eruption has not been constrained to just one player—or even a group of players. A total of 12 players have recorded points through five matches with four players scoring the team's 11 goals. Three players have tallied their first collegiate points this year with freshman Dylan Teves scoring his first collegiate goal in the match at Denver two weeks ago.
9 – Joey Parish is Finding His Stride
Junior Joey Parish has found his stride through the first part of the season, scoring three goals and adding three assists to lead the team with nine points.
