Huskies Hold Off CSUN For 2-1 Victory
September 07, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Washington netted a pair of first half goals and held off a late barrage in a 2-1 victory over CSUN on Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The 23rd-ranked Huskies improve to 4-1-0 on the season with victory while dropping the Matadors to 3-2-0.
Joey Parish had a goal and an assist for Washington, recording the eventual match-winner in the 33rd minute. Kyle Coffee tallied the other goal for the Huskies with Ethan Bartlow and Corban Anderson each adding assists.
Coffee got the Huskies on the board in the 19th minute. Bartlow got the play started by sending a long ball from beyond the halfway line to the far side where Parish settled it and sent a low cross into the box. Coffee found space between two defenders and headed it into the goal to put UW up early.
Just 19 minutes later, the Huskies added a second goal as Parish collected a loose ball in the front of the goal mouth and sent it into the net to make it 2-0.
Washington dominated play in the first half, holding a 7-0 edge in shots and controlling the ball through much of the period. CSUN's best chance through the first 45 minutes came just seven minutes into the contest. An initial shot by the Matadors was blocked and a follow up was sent into the back of the net. As CSUN celebrated, the referee conferred with the linesman and ruled the second player offside and nullified the goal.
The Matadors would come out taking more chances in the second half and were able to find the back of the net in the 61st minute. CSUN was able to take advantage of a free kick from just in front of their bench on the near side. The cross went into the mess of bodies in the box where Johnny Rodriguez was able to get a head on it and score.
CSUN would continue to press, looking for the tying goal. While the Matadors generated six shots over the final 25 minutes, just one was on frame and where Saif Kerawala made the save to preserve the win.
"It was the most complete performance we've had in the first half," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "It was two goals going on five, but if you don't put away your chances against a good team like CSUN, they are going to find a way to get themselves on the scoreboard. Once they did, they made it hard on us."
Bartlow's assist in the first half was his first collegiate point as he became 11th player to record at least a point for the Huskies this season. Parish also overtook Scott Menzies for the team lead in points with nine, collecting three goals and three assists on the year.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, hosting No. 14 Akron in a huge NCAA showdown at 4:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
