September 08, 2018 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE – The University of Washington men's golf team will open the 2018-19 season at the Gopher Invitational this week as they head to Minnesota, Sunday and Monday, Sept 9-10 at the Windsong Farm Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes on Sunday with an 6:30 a.m. PT shotgun start followed by 18 holes on Monday on the par-71, 7,368 yard course. Washington will be paired with Iowa and one of Minnesota's teams.
FROM COACH MURRAY: "This is an excellent course and we're very excited as we have three freshmen in the lineup. It's a great field and will be a stiff test for everyone playing to start the season off. It's going to be a wonderful experience for our team moving forward playing at a championship venue like this."
THE FIELD: Washington will be joined by 12 other teams in its season opening tournament. The 13-team field (Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll preseason ranking) includes Arkansas (17), Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Iowa, Michigan State, New Mexico, NC State, Oklahoma (3), Purdue, San Diego State, Texas (10) and Utah.
THE LINEUP: The Huskies will send junior Henry Lee, sophomore Noah Woolsey and freshmen Paul Margolis, Robert Moran and Padraic Sim. The remaining four Huskies on the roster (William Mansfield, Shamu Bodhidatta, Jan Schneider and Ranveer Grewal) will compete in a separate individual tournament in Minnesota.
FRESH ROSTER: Also most half of the Huskies roster for 2018-19 will be new to Montlake this season as the Dawgs welcome freshmen Paul Margolis (Cannes, France), Robert Moran (Dublin, Ireland), Ranveer Grewal (Ludhiana, Indiana) and Padraic Sim (Spanish Fort, Alabama). The newcomers bring a wealth of international experience as three come to Seattle from outside of the country.
WHAT'S BACK: Junior Henry Lee and sophomore Noah Woolsey were second and third on the team in stroke average a year ago and return to lead the Huskies this season. Lee competed in 13 events including earning a spot at the NCAA Pacific Regional alongside Carl Yuan. He averaged a 72.37, posted two top 10 showings with his best being a sixth-place tie while also shooting under par in 15 of his 38 rounds. Woolsey averaged 72.91 in his 12 events and finished in the top two of the lineup for UW in six of those outings.
FALL SCHEDULE: Head coach Alan Murray didn't hold back when scheduling the Huskies fall slate as UW will traverse the country and play on some impressive courses against some of the top teams in the country. Along with the tournament in Minnesota, which features eight teams that competed at the NCAA Championships a year ago, Washington will play at the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country club in Texas and the Tavistock Collegiate at Isleworth Country Club in Florida. After a two-year hiatus, UW returns to hosting the Husky Invitational and welcoming some of the top teams in the region to the Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish, Sept. 25-26. Closing the season, the team will play at the Royal Ka'anapali course in Hawaii for the first time.
HUSKIES IN THE PROS: Washington golf alumni have been very visible on the pro circuits this season with C.T. Pan currently sitting 33rd in the FedEx Cup rankings on the PGA Tour. He's posted two top 10 finishes this season with his best coming at the Wyndham Championship where he tied for second. He also tied for fourth at the Dell Technologies Championship. Alex Prugh again earned his PGA Card after solid showings on the Web.Com Tour while Corey Pereira has been strong on the Mackenzie Tour, recently winning his first title on the tour at the ATB Financial Classic. Carl Yuan, Nick Taylor, and eight other former Dawgs are also competing professionally.
