UW Claims Husky Invitational Team Title; Moran Wins Individual Crown
September 26, 2018 | Men's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. --- The Washington men's golf team won the Husky Invitational at Aldarra Golf Club on Wednesday shooting a 21-over 1,086 (366-361-359). Freshman Robert Moran earned his first collegiate victory shooting a 1-under par 212 (73-68-71) for the tournament title.
"I'm really happy," said head coach Alan Murray. "Anytime you win in golf, that's a good thing, because it's hard to do. I'm really happy for the guys, we have a good group of kids. There's a nice energy in the group and we're young as well. Hopefully the success will cause us to keep on going from there."
The Huskies led after all three rounds, and decisively won the tournament by 16 strokes over second place Nevada.
Moran earned medalist honors in only his second career start for the Huskies. The Dublin native overcame a triple bogey on the 10th by posting back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th holes. Moran's second round 68 was one of only five total rounds shot in the 60's during the tournament.
"I'm delighted. It was great to get a team win, that's the most important priority," said Moran. "To help the team individually is great, I'm really happy. I drove the ball really well throughout the two days, my speed putting was very good because these greens are brutal. I didn't have any 3-putts today, so I was happy about that."
"That's unbelievable," said Murray on Moran's play. "I was walking with him the last 18 holes, and he didn't play like a freshman. He had a blip in the middle of the round with a triple and then responded, making two birdies. He showed some heart."
The team's victory was also head coach Alan Murray's first in his time as a Husky men's golf coach and the first for the program since the 2015-16 season.
Sophomore Noah Woolsey tied for second place for the tournament after shooting a 1-over 214 (73-70-71). Woolsey's second place finish was his highest career finish and also his first career top-10.
Junior Henry Lee earned his second top 10 finish of the season after shooting 7-over par (71-77-72) and earning a tie for ninth place. Sophomore Jan Schneider tied for 15th after shooting a 9-over par 222 (76-73-73) for the tournament.
Freshman Ranveer Grewal finished at 12-over (73-73-79), which put him in a tie for 23rd place in his first career event as a Husky. Rounding out the UW scoring group was freshman Paul Margolis who tied for 31st place after shooting 14-over 227 (76-79-72). Margolis ended the tournament strong, carding a 1-over par round of 72 in his third round.
Junior Shamu Bodhidatta, competing as an individual, tied for 33rd place at 15-over par (79-19-17). In Bodhidatta's final round 71, he carded six birdies. Senior William Mansfield, also playing as an individual finished the tournament in a tie for 41st place at 19-over par (77-84-71). He shot his best round of the tournament in the third round going even par.
"This course was really tough; it was a championship test," said Murray." Knowing that we can play that kind of a course well gives us a bit of confidence. It was similar to our last tournament in Minnesota, at a really hard, championship course. With three freshmen in the lineup it was a welcome to college golf moment. I think that experience helped this week."
The Huskies led the field in total pars and birdies, as well as recording the lowest Par 3 and Par 4 scoring. All three days the course played difficult for the field as the scoring average was greater than 77 in Round 1 and Round 2, while the average score was over 76 in the final round.
The Huskies will next be in action at the Nike Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas on Sep 30-Oct. 2.
