INDEPENDENCE, MINN. – The University of Washington men's golf team finished its 2018-19 season-opening tournament carding a 25-over 877 (300-285-292) to place 12th at the prestigious Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Minnesota. The Huskies were led by junior Henry Lee who finished eighth overall.
"We were disappointed to finish 12th and while it would be easy to get down on ourselves, we have to remember we had three freshmen in the lineup making their first appearance in a collegiate tournament without one team practice under their belt," said head coach Alan Murray. "We knew it was going to be a challenge since we couldn't report until the day before we left but there were lots of positives for us moving forward."
Lee carded his fourth career top 10 finish with his eighth-place showing after earning two top 10s as a sophomore and one as a freshman. His third round scorecard showed a 1-over 72 to give him a three-day total of 1-under 212 (70-70-72). Lee's round was highlighted by his first eagle of the season which came on his ninth hole of the day, the par-5 18th, since UW started on the 10th. It brought him back to even-par entering the back nine where he went 1-over for his score of 72.
"Henry had a great week and played very well to register another great finish in the top 10," Murray added.
Following him on the leaderboard was freshman Paul Margolis who saved his best round of the tournament for last. After starting with a 77-73 on Sunday, Margolis posted a 1-under 70 on Monday to climb 15 spots and finish tied for 38th at 7-over 220. The newcomer out of France had a great start to the day going four-under through his first 14 holes. He had a few hiccups on the 15th, 16th and 17th going bogey, double, bogey but closed his round with another birdie to finish under par.
Sophomore Noah Woolsey also moved up during the final round, jumping four spots into a tie for 52nd with his 10-over 223 (75-76-72). Much like Margolis, Woolsey's best round of the event came on Monday as he carded a 1-over 72 thanks to two birdies and a clean back nine where he went 1-under.
"Noah Woolsey responded well today with a gritty 1-over par despite not having close to his best," said Murray.
Closing out scoring for the Dawgs was freshman Robert Moran who finished tied for 65th at 14-over 227 (78-68-81). Despite having UW's best round of the entire tournament, his 3-under 68 on Sunday, Moran had a tougher go-around on Monday. He finished his first nine at 7-under but got back on track during the final nine with just three blemishes on his card en route to his third round score of 81. Additionally, freshman Padraic Sim posted a 20-over 233 (81-74-78) to place 71st.
The Huskies return to Seattle and will host the Husky Invitational Sept. 25-26 at Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish.
"We will get back to Seattle and get the new guys settled and I believe we will be much further along by the time the Husky Invitational comes around in two weeks," said Murray. "I think this week highlights that we clearly need to improve but also proved to ourselves that we have some talent and are going to progress throughout the season. It's not about where we start but where we finish."
