Dawgs Atop the Leaderboard at Husky Invitational
September 25, 2018 | Men's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. --- The University of Washington men's golf team kicked off its lone home tournament of the year on Tuesday sitting atop the leaderboard of the 12-team field with a 16-stroke lead at 6-over. The Huskies were led by three players in the top three and all five in scoring position landing in the top 20 at Aldarra Golf Club, one of the Huskies' home courses.
The teams were supposed to play 36 on Tuesday but with morning fog delaying action by two hours, play was stopped with teams in the middle of round two because of darkness. Wednesday will start with the conclusion of round two immediately leading into round three's final 18 holes. All pairings from Tuesday will stay the same.
"I was happy with how they played today," said head coach Alan Murray. "It's an extremely hard course as you can see from the scoring. Everyone has played really well. We had three guys in the top three, everyone is in the top 30, obviously we're still finishing round two but after round one I think we were at 11 over and you know for five guys out there on a demanding course like that is pretty good really. Then this afternoon, you had a few guys under par but again we still have holes to play. It's very like golf, this course, just when you think you have it figured out, it will get you in some way."
Washington was led by freshman Robert Moran who after 29 holes completed, is in first place at 2-under. He started the day with a 2-over 73 in a round that had just three blemishes but really started to pick up steam in round two. Despite a bogey on his first hole (the second), Moran birdied the third and fourth in back-to-back fashion then tacked on two more on holes six and seven. He made par on the next three stops before adding his sixth birdie of the day on the 11th giving him a round-two total of 4-under when play was stopped.
"He's a great kid and it's funny because he's always unhappy about something in a good way," said Murray. "He's very talented, hits it a long way and had a good go at it out there today. I mean all of our guys are really tough and as long as everyone keeps working hard and keeping a good attitude about everything, which they've really done a good job at this week, I think we'll be trending in the right direction."
Sharing a tie for third at even par were sophomore Noah Woolsey and freshman Ranveer Grewal. Woolsey, one of the Huskies' top returners from a year ago, opened the tournament with a 2-over 73 following an up and down first round. He was at 5-over after his first nine but went on to close the round at 3-under thanks to four birdies en route to his 73. Woolsey continued his solid play on his second go around adding three birdies and one bogey and will start the second half of round two on Wednesday at 2-under par.
Grewal made his Husky debut on Tuesday as the freshmen carded seven birdies in his first 29 holes in purple and gold. Following his opening round, Grewal was another Dawg that saw improvements on the second 18. He opened with a bogey but then went 3-under with seven pars and no blemishes giving him a score of 2-under to start Wednesday.
Junior Henry Lee recorded UW's best score of the opening round as he posted an even-par 71. Despite hitting par on nine of his next 11 holes, he tallied two double bogeys and is at 4-over heading into play on Wednesday.
Rounding out the six-count-five lineup for UW were sophomore Jan Schneider and freshman Paul Margolis. Schneider and Margolis each posted first round scores of 5-over 76 and are currently tied for 17th (5-over) and tied for 30th (8-over), respectively. Two Huskies also competed as individuals with senior William Mansfield and junior Shamu Bodhidatta each sit tied for 45th at 12-over.
"I think this is kind of a similar test to Minnesota, which was just a hard course, and this one is probably a little bit tougher," added Murray. "Everyone kind of had little wobbles in their round and they all responded really well. There's probably an added level of comfort being home though. Noah and Henry, who are top returners have also been a big help to our young guys which has been good to see."
As previously mentioned, Wednesday will start with the end of round two immediately leading into round three with continuous play and the same pairings. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com
