Huskies Wrap Up Road Trip at Gonzaga
September 01, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- The Huskies look to rebound from a disappoint loss their last time against long-time rival Gonzaga on Monday in Spokane. First touch is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Luger Field. Streaming video for the match is available on TheW.tv with live stats available through the Gonzaga website.
Fresh off a huge jump in the most recent coaches' poll, the No. 3 Huskies dropped a tough 3-2, double overtime match at No. 19 Denver on Thursday. Despite overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit and leading 2-1 with under 20 minutes left, Washington was unable to hold the lead and lost in the second overtime session.
The loss was the first of the season for the Huskies who has still managed to score two goals in each match so far. Jaret Townsend, who recorded a pair of assists in Monday's match at New Mexico, scored Washington's first goal of the match. The junior got a head on a free kick to tie the match late in the first. Freshman Dylan Teves tallied his first collegiate goal, giving the Huskies the lead in the 63rd minute.
Despite allowing three goals on Thursday, the Huskies defense has been stout through the first three matches, allowing just seven shots on goal out of the 32 total shots taken by three high-powered offenses.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs At A Glance
The Bulldogs enter Monday's match still looking for their first win, recording a 5-2 loss to Cal Baptist on Friday after opening the season with a pair of draws: 2-2 at Bradley to start the year and a scoreless tie against Cal Poly last week.
Freshman Demitrius Kigeya leads the team, scoring two of the team's four goals thus far. However, the Bulldogs have surrendered seven goals through three matches, though they did record a shutout in the scoreless draw against Cal Poly.
On Friday, Cal Baptist recorded three goals in the first 39 minutes to take a quick 3-0 lead. Gonzaga battled back with a pair of goals early in the second half. But 32 seconds after pulling within one, the Lancers netted a goal to go back up by two, then scored in the final minute for the three-goal victory.
Series History
The all-time series between the two teams as been quite one sided with Washington posting a 29-1-1 overall record against Gonzaga. The Huskies are a perfect 17-0-0 against the Bulldogs in Seattle and are 11-1-1 in Spokane (with one win in a neutral-site match). The lone Gonzaga win in the series came back in 2007 as the Bulldogs took a 2-1 victory in Spokane. Since then, the Huskies have won the last nine-straight including a 3-0 win in Seattle last season. That match was moved to UW due to smoke in Spokane.
That's Just Offensive, Man
The Washington offense has scored six goals over its first three matches, keeping up its impressive rate from last season. In 2017, Washington scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during the 2013 campaign. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40 or more goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Overtime Blues
The Huskies' 3-2 double-overtime loss at Denver extended their streak to five straight overtime matches without a victory (0-4-1). Washington went 0-3-1 in four OT matches in 2017. The Huskies last overtime win was a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.
Caution! Hot Coffee!
Kyle Coffee tallied his second goal of the season at New Mexico, recording the game's first goal just two minutes into the second half. Dating back to last season, Coffee has now scored seven goals in UW's last nine matches and has 13 in his career. Coffee added an assist on Scott Menzies' insurance goal later in the match and leads the team with five points.
Another Game-Winner for Menzies
Scott Menzies tallied the match-winner with his goal off a rebound in the 31st minute vs. Maryland. He added a goal against New Mexico, though–surprisingly–it wasn't a match-winner. The senior now has 11 goals in his career with six of them counting as match-winners.
Teves Tallies No. 1
Freshman Dylan Teves recorded his first collegiate goal with a blast in the 63rd minute at No. 19 Denver. Teves worked around a pair of defenders and cracked a shot from just outside of the box for his tally of the season.
Parish the Thought
Joey Parish earned a spot on the DI Team of the Week from both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer for the week ending Aug. 26 with a pair of assists in the Huskies' 2-0 win over Maryland. He continued his hot play last week, recording his first goal of the season at Denver. The junior now has five career goals through three seasons including three last season.
Shutout Saif
Saif Kerawala has already recorded a pair of shutouts this season which gives him nine over the last two seasons. He currently leads the Pac-12 with those two cleansheets after ranking second with seven last season.
In the Rankings ...
The Huskies made a huge jump in the Coaches' Poll rankings released Aug. 28, moving from No. 24 to No. 3, earning 471 more votes than in the preseason poll. Washington came in at No. 10 in the Soccer America poll, No. 16 in the College Soccer News poll and No. 18 with Top Drawer Soccer. RPI rankings are not yet available.
Number 200 for Clark
Monday's match vs. New Mexico was the 200th match coached by UW Head Coach Jamie Clark in 11 seasons. Clark posted a 128-50-22 record in 200 matches during three stops as a head coach including an 89-35-19 record at Washington. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one season at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.
Difficult Road Ahead
The Huskies have put together one of the most challenging schedules in the country with eight teams (11 total matches) against teams currently ranked or receiving votes in the latest Coaches' poll. In the Pac-12 alone, three fellow conference members are ranked in the Top 15 with UCLA (#8), Stanford (#10) and California (#14).
Preseason All-Pac-12 Coaches Picks
The Huskies saw three players named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team: senior defender Quentin Pearson, redshirt senior midfielder Kyle Coffee and sophomore midfielder Blake Bodily. In addition, UW was picked to finish second by the Pac-12 coaches, just six points behind Stanford and one point ahead of UCLA.
1,000 Matches in Program History
The Huskies' season-opening match against Maryland was the 1,000th in program history. Men's soccer has been a varsity sport at Washington since the 1962 season and the Huskies amassed a record of 626-263-111 over the course of its first 1,000 matches.
For Openers...
Washington's 2-0 win over Maryland improved its overall record in home openers to 48-5-4. The Huskies have won seven-straight home openers dating back to 2011 and have lost just twice in their last 30 (26-2-2) such matches going back to 1988. Washington also moves to 39-13-5 in season openers all-time.
2017 Pac-12 All-Conference Selections
Washington placed seven players on the All-Pac-12 team including Blake Bodily, who earned First-Team honors and was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Handwalla Bwana joined him on the First-Team after finishing second in the Pac-12 in points with 22 (8g, 6a) and goals (8). Forward Kyle Coffee, defender Quentin Pearson and goalkeeper Saif Kerawala are among the returners to earn second-team recognition.
Grimsby's Growth
Redshirt sophomore Cole Grimsby cracked the starting lineup at leftback in Friday's home opener, something that seemed impossible last season. Grimsby was low on the depth chart during the 2017 season and appeared in just one match, playing the final minute in a blowout early in the season. However, he has grown by leaps and bounds in the off-season and was rewarded with the start on Friday. Grimsby played 80 minutes and contributed on both ends of the field. He was forced off with 10 minutes left after a hard challenge, but will likely see a lot of playing time from here on out.
2018 UW Debuts
Washington saw four players make their collegiate debuts in the Huskies' match vs Maryland. Two of those players were in the starting line-up: true freshman Ethan Bartlow and redshirt freshman Noah Whitman. Bartlow–a highly-rated defender coming out of high school–played the full 90 at center back, looking like a seasoned vet next to senior captain Quentin Pearson.
Whitman turned heads as he made the start at forward. After playing on defense in practice last season, he was moved up top to help provide depth. Whitman made such an impact in fall training, he was given the start and rewarded the decision by showing impressive speed and touch in 52 minutes on Friday.
True freshmen Dylan Teves and Charlie Ostrem came off the bench for the Huskies in their collegiate debuts. Both played around 10 minutes in the match and made solid contributions late in the close contest.
