No. 3 Huskies Fall to No. 19 Denver 3-2 in Double Overtime
August 30, 2018 | Men's Soccer
DENVER – The University of Washington suffered its first loss of the season, falling 3-2 in double overtime to No. 19 Denver at the UD Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.
The Huskies, who moved up to No. 3 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, drop to 2-1-0 on the season while the Pioneers move to 2-0-0.
Denver's Andre Shinyashiki scored three minutes into the second overtime period to give the Pioneers the victory. The Huskies had done a fantastic job holding the senior—who tallied three goals in Denver's opener—to just a pair of shots through the first 100 minutes of the match. However, he was able to get free on a cross into the box and sent a quick shot to the far post to end it.
Washington fought back from a one-goal, halftime deficit with two goals through the first part of the second half. However, the Pioneers were able to find the equalizer with just over 10 minutes left.
Denver continues it dominance at home, having lost just five times over their last 65 home matches going back seven years (56-5-4).
The Pioneers got on the board first on a Washington own goal. Denver was pressing early in the contest and a low cross in front of the goal mouth was knocked into the goal by a Husky defender just six minutes in.
The score would remain 1-0 through the first half before the Huskies tied things early in the second. Just under two minutes in, Washington drew a free kick from about 25 yards out on the left side. Cole Grimsby took the free kick and sent it toward the far post where Joey Parish got a head on it and sent it into the goal.
Just under a minute later the Huskies nearly took the lead as another great ball by Grimsby into the box went to the head of Kyle Coffee, but his header rattled off the crossbar and was cleared.
Washington kept up the pressure and was able to finally break through with the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute. Freshman Dylan Teves gathered the ball on right side, worked around a defender and fired a shot from just outside of the box. It would take a minor deflection and find the back of the net to give the Huskies the lead.
Denver kept battling and was able to tie the game with just 13 minutes to go. After a bad giveaway on the Huskies backline, the Pioneers earned a corner kick. The kick itself sailed high over everyone but was gathered on the left side by Moshe Perez. He took a second to survey the defense, worked around a UW defender and fired a quick blast inside the far post.
Washington seemed to have the better chances in the first overtime, creating a pair of shots seven minutes in. After earning a corner kick, the ball into the box was punched away by the keeper just before it found the head of a Husky attacker. The ball went out to the top of the box where a shot by Menzies went wide.
With under a minute to go, Scott Menzies broke down the left side and slid a ball through the box where Coffee was ready to tap it in. But a Denver defender came sliding in at the last second to knock it away.
Washington returns to action on Monday, traveling to Spokane to face Gonzaga in a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
