Ten Reasons to Attend Tonight's Men's Soccer Match vs Maryland
August 24, 2018 | Men's Soccer, Tickets
The University of Washington Men's Soccer team opens the 2018 season on Friday night against the University of Maryland. Are you on the fence about going to the match? Here are 10 reasons why you should attend:
1. Game #1,000
Tonight's match is the 1,000th in program history! The Huskies have amassed a record of 625-263-111 over the course of 56 seasons and look to get a "W" in game #1,000. There will be a special celebration at halftime including players and coaches form the past. You won't want to miss it!
2. Maryland is a top program
While Maryland is just in the receiving votes category in the NCAA/United Soccer Coaches Preseason poll, the Terrapins are a perennial NCAA power. Maryland has won three NCAA Championships, reached the Final Four 13 times and made the Tournament 37 ties overall. The Terrapins have reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen 13 times over the last 15 seasons. The program has also produced a number of amazing professionals including Taylor Twellman, Mo Adu, Omar Gonzales and Graham Zusi. A win against Maryland to open the season would be an impressive way to open 2018.
3. These Huskies have a solid core of seniors to guide the team
Washington is led by an experienced group of seniors this season: Defender Quentin Pearson, Midfielders Kyle Coffee, Corban Anderson and Luke Hauswirth and forward Scott Menzies. The seniors have helped the program achieve success over their time here at UW, though they feel the team hasn't quite reached its potential. As a group, they are fun to watch and should provide fans with an exciting match every time out.
4. The Huskies are incredibly good in home openers
Washington is an incredible 47-5-4 overall record in 56 all-time home openers and have won six-straight dating back to 2011. And since we aren't playing Portland in this home opener, the chances of a victory are even better. If you remove two losses to Portland in 2009 and 2011 from the equation, the Huskies are 25-0-2 in home openers since 1998! Overall, the Huskies are 38-13-5 in season-opening contests.
5. Washington has three Preseason All-Pac-12 Selections
The Huskies placed three players on the 12-man Pac-12 Preseason all-conference squad: senior midfielder Kyle Coffee, senior defender Quentin Pearson and sophomore midfielder Blake Bodily. And hey, putting three players on a 12-man all-conference team is pretty impressive, no?
6. And a First-Team Preseason All-American in Blake Bodily
Bodily, who was the 2017 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, was also recently named as a First-Team Preseason All-American by College Soccer News! Bodily finished his freshman year with three goals and a team-high eight assists, ranking third in the conference in points with 14. He was one of two Pac-12 selections on the first team and one of three from our conference overall.
7. Washington is looking for its sixth trip to the NCAA tournament in the last six years
Washington has become a power on the NCAA scene itself over the last five years, reaching the NCAA Tournament five times and making to at least the Sweet Sixteen in three of those seasons. in 2013, the team reached its first-ever Elite Eight and earned a spot in the third round in 2014 and 2016. After a disappointing first-round loss last year, the Huskies are looking to make yet another deep dive into the tournament in 2018.
8. The smoke is gone!
The weather has changed and the smoke is gone! After having to practice indoors all week due to smoke from forest fires in British Columbia, the wind changed direction and pushed the smoke out of the Puget Sound area. Instead of hot, smoky days we expect to see a nice, cool Autumn evening for tonight's match.
9. You can come early and watch the women's team take on Cal State Fullerton
The Washington women's team plays its home opener at 5:00 p.m., battling Cal State Fullerton out of the Big West. Come early and cheer on the women's team in one of two doubleheaders this season.
10. Where else can you enjoy an atmosphere like this?
Seriously ... The atmosphere at night games on Montlake is incredible!
