Meggs Adds Ronnie Prettyman to Staff
July 12, 2018 | Baseball
SEATTLE β University of Washington head baseball coach Lindsay Meggs has announced that Ronnie Prettyman will join his staff as an assistant coach. Prettyman comes to Montlake by way of Loyola Marymount where he served as an assistant and recruiting coordinator the past three years. Prettyman will primarily work with hitters and catchers, while also assisting with infielders. He will take over for Donegal Fergus who left UW to become the associate head coach at UC Santa Barbara following the Diamond Dawgs' historic year.Β
"Our players are going to love Coach Prettyman," said Meggs. "Not only is he a great teacher who is relentlessly committed to player development, but he's also stood in the batter's box with the game on the line in Omaha. Ronnie won a National Championship as the starting third baseman at Cal State Fullerton in 2004, and he was an assistant coach on Fullerton's 2015 Omaha club." Β
"I am so grateful to Coach Meggs, Director of Athletics Jennifer Cohen, and the University of Washington for giving me this opportunity," said Prettyman. "My family is excited to embrace the city of Seattle and the Purple and Gold. My son has not taken off his UW football jersey that we bought him for the last three days."Β
While at LMU, Prettyman helped with the resurgence of Lion baseball. The highlight of the three-year stretch was 2017, where he assisted on a team that went 38-18 and captured a share of the West Coast Conference title β the first since 2000 β after going 20-7 in league play. During the 2017 campaign Prettyman served as hitting coach and under his tutelage the Lions had six players finish with a .300 or higher batting averages. The team also had seven All-West Coast Conference honorees.Β
Prior to his coaching stint at Loyola Marymount, Prettyman spent a year at his alma mater, Cal State Fullerton, helping guide the perennial power back to the College World Series in 2015. He also was an assistant for three years at Indiana State β a period in which the Sycamores earned a pair of NCAA Tournament berths.Β
Before his coaching tenure, Prettyman excelled on the diamond at Cal State Fullerton, helping the Titans to back-to-back College World Series appearances (2003 & 2004), including a National Championship in 2004. He was a three-time All-Big West nod and was a career .332 hitter while in Fullerton.Β
"The expectation of this program is Omaha," added Prettyman. "Last year's group was able to accomplish that and substantiate those expectations. I have been fortunate to play in Omaha and coach in Omaha, it energizes me to join this program that just went through it and understands the work and sacrifices that come with those goals."Β
Prettyman is no stranger to the greater Seattle baseball scene, as the third baseman was a 10th round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2005 MLB First Year Player Draft. He went on to play in the Mariners minor league system from 2005-10, reaching as high as Triple-A (Tacoma) in 2007.Β
"As the recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor at LMU the past three years, Ronnie is widely regarded as one of the most talented young coaches in our game," added Meggs. "A former AAA player himself, Ronnie has succeeded in this game as a player and a coach at every level. Β And off the field, I can't think of a better role model than Ronnie Prettyman."
"My confidence in Coach Meggs, Coach Kelly, and Coach Nakama, and their leadership could not be higher," concluded Prettyman. "With the talented players we have coming back and the guys coming in, it will be a fun group for Husky fans to watch in the spring. I can't wait to get on the field with these guys. Go Dawgs!"
He will be joined in Seattle by his wife, Tiffiny, son, Kannen (2), and daughter, Cali (Nine months). Β
What They Are Saying About Ronnie PrettymanΒ
"UW Baseball and Coach Meggs have absolutely knocked it out of the park with the hiring of Ronnie Prettyman. Ronnie is a rising star in this profession. Being in the West Coast Conference, I've had a chance to watch Coach Prettyman's hitters for a number of years. The thing that jumps out at you is how much improvement takes place from year to year. His guys come in as young prospects and leave as professional hitters. Β Preparation, plate discipline and approach are staples for his hitters. How can Husky baseball's year get any better? It just did!"
USD Head Coach Rich HillΒ
"The University of Washington is getting a great addition to its coaching staff in Ronnie Prettyman. Ronnie is a very well rounded coach who not only knows the game but also how to connect with the student athletes. And while I believe Ronnie is one of the top hitting coaches in all of college baseball, he is a great person as well. The Huskies are getting a good one."
Cal State Fullerton Head Coach Rick Vanderhook
"Congratulations to Coach Meggs and Husky Baseball on the hiring of Ronnie Prettyman. Β Ronnie is a premier coach that has a great reputation for recruiting and developing big time talent. His hitters are always prepared, tough and compete at a super high level. Washington made a knock-out hire with Ronnie Prettyman."
Saint Mary's Head Coach Eric Valenzuela
"I could not be more excited for the University of Washington Baseball program, Coach Prettyman, and his family. The Dawgs are gaining an amazing coach and an even better person. Β I had the privilege of playing for Coach Prettyman one summer in the Prospect League. He knows how to effectively communicate with hitters in a way that allows them to maximize their potential. He has experience and knows what it takes to not only be successful in college but also in professional baseball. I can't think of a better hire to fill this role for the Dawgs, and to continue the success and development of Husky Baseball."
