Huskies Looking Forward To Decisive Game After Being Cooled Off By Titans
June 09, 2018 | Baseball
FULLERTON, Calif. – Husky senior Joe Wainhouse homered twice, but they were both solo shots – and his team's only runs – as Washington fell, 5-2, in game two of its Super Regional against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at Goodwin Field.
Washington (34-24) entered the game 9-1 over its previous 10 games and were just one win away from clinching the first College World Series berth in school history. But, Cal State Fullerton (36-24), making its 14th Super Regional appearance and trying for a 19th CWS trip, ruined the Huskies' celebration plans with solid pitching and timely hitting.
"They're here for a reason, just like we are," Huskies' ninth-year head coach Lindsay Meggs said. "Nobody has to be reminded about their history and the type of program they are and the success they have had. I don't know how realistic it is to have anyone come in here and get them in two games."
The Titans made sure it would be their day, jumping ahead of the Huskies early and never letting the visiting team get into any kind of groove. In the second inning, the first three Titans reached on a triple, double and single to go up 1-0.
UW starter Jordan Jones got a 6-4-3 double play to minimize the Titans from having a bigger inning, but Jake Pavletich scored on the play to give Fullerton a 2-0 advantage.
The Huskies got a run back in the fourth inning when Wainhouse went opposite field on a 1-1 fastball from Tommy Wilson for the first of his two home runs. He would add another blast off Brett Conine to lead off the ninth inning.
For Wainhouse, he is up to 19 home runs on the season, five in five post-season games, and has hit 13 over the Huskies' last 17 games. The senior All-Pac-12 performer is tied for third most home runs by a UW player in a single season.
Unfortunately, not only did Wainhouse account for all of the Huskies' scoring, his two hits were a third of the Huskies' total for the night.
Willie MacIver had two hits for Washington, while Braiden Ward and AJ Graffanino each tallied one hit. All were singles and came with the bases empty.
Fullerton scored two more runs off Jones in the fifth and tallied its final run in the seventh inning off Josh Burgmann.
Jones (6-4) labored through 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and the four earned runs, before giving way to Burgmann, who scattered four hits over four innings of relief.
The Huskies had reached double digits in hits in their four previous post-season games, but Wilson was able to hold them to only three hits over seven innings. He struck out three and walked only one batter in his 97-pitch outing. He picked up the win to improve to 7-0 on the season and left the game leading 5-1.
The win by the Titans sets up a winner-takes-all game on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. While it will be a program first – playing in a decisive game three for a chance to advance to the College World Series – Meggs and his squad are relishing the opportunity.
"As I told our guys, this is why you play college baseball," he said. "This is why you come to the University of Washington, or why you go to Cal State Fullerton; to play in a game in front of what I'm sure will be a rowdy crowd for a trip to the College World Series. For both teams, what a great tune-up it will be for Omaha.
"We're looking forward to it."
