Carlson & Callahan Earn Honors From Pac-12
May 23, 2018 | Men's Rowing
Washington's Chris Carlson was named Pac-12 Men's Rowing Newcomer of the Year and head coach Michael Callahan earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the ninth time in the last 11 years, as the conference office announced the annual rowing awards.
In addition, four UW oarsmen earned All-Pac-12: Samuel Halbert, Rielly Milne, Viktor Pivac and Bram Schwarz.
Carlson, a junior from Bedford, N.H., transferred to the UW from Marist University prior to the 2017-18 school year. After beginning the year in the second varsity eight, he earned a spot in the top boat that won at the Windermere Cup and at the Pac-12 Championships.
Callahan, in his 11th year as the UW men's head coach, led the Huskies to the Pac-12 title and takes his team to the IRA Championship Regatta (June 1-3) as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. The former UW captain, he's led the Huskies to the national championship six times in 10 attempts so far.
The four Huskies named to the All-Pac-12 team were all a part of the varsity eight that won at the Pac-12 Championships.
Halbert is a junior from Redmond, Wash., who won at 2017 IRAs in the Huskies' second varsity eight. He'll participate in the USRowing Under-23 National Team Camp this summer.
Milne, a senior from Woodinville, Wash., also won the IRA title in the second varsity eight last season. He won a bronze medal in the U.S. men's coxed four at Under-23 World Championships last season and will also attend the selection camp this summer.
Pivac, a senior from Belgrade, Serbia, won IRA titles in the freshman boat in 2015 and in the 2V8+ last year. He has won medals at four straight Under-23 World Championship regattas (2014-17) and earned the bronze in the men's pair at senior World Championships in 2015.
Schwarz is a sophomore from Haarlem, The Netherlands. He earned a place in the UW varsity eight halfway through his freshman season in 2017 and rowed at senior Worlds last summer.
The Huskies travel to West Windsor, N.J., next week for the 2018 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships June 1-3 at Mercer Lake.
