NCAA West Preliminary Championships
May 24-26 | Sacramento, Calif. | Hornet Stadium
SEATTLE -ย The final competition before a potential NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance has arrived for the Husky track and field athletes, as UW puts its best up against hundreds of the best athletes in the western half of the country at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships. Sacramento State plays host to the qualifying rounds for the first time in the current format. The Huskies will have twenty-two individual entries plus three relays competing during the three-day meet, starting Thursday, May 24 and wrapping up Saturday, May 26. The goal is to finish in the top-12 in individual events and relays inside Hornet Stadium, to then move on to the final site in Eugene, Ore. from June 6-9.
The NCAA Championships start with fields of 96 athletes in every individual event and 48 relays, splitting those fields into a West and East region. Forty-eight individuals in each event and 24 relays are on hand in Sacramento while the Eastern half meets this week in Tampa, Florida. Out of each region will come 12 qualifiers to continue on at Oregon. All individual track events from 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds in Sacramento, while the 3,000m steeplechase, the 5k and 10k races will have one round, and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays will have one round as well. Throws and horizontal jumps will take all 48 entries and give them all three throws each, while the high jump and pole vault will keep moving up until only 12 competitors remain.
