Washington To Host Alabama With Trip To WCWS On The Line
May 21, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE - The #5 Washington Huskies will host Super Regionals for the second year in a row after sweeping their way through the Seattle Regional. Washington plays host to the #12 Alabama Crimson Tide with a trip to the Women's College World Series on the line. That best-of-three series will begin Friday, May 25 at 6:00 pm. This is the eighth time in the last nine years Washington has gone to Super Regionals.
Washington won all three of its games in NCAA Regionals to advance last weekend. The Huskies took down Boise State, Texas, and Minnesota, allowing only three total runs in the three games. Gabbie Plain was named the Seattle Regional's Most Outstanding Player as the freshman picked up wins in all three games while allowing one run in her 16.0 innings. Five Huskies hit over .400 in the Regional, led by Taylor Van Zee's .500/.667/.625 line.
The Huskies began the Regional by drawing a season-high ten walks against Boise State. As a team, Washington had a .424 on-base percentage last weekend. With 185 walks on the season now, Washington makes it ten years in a row drawing at least 180 walks. Five different Huskies have drawn more than 20 walks, led by Van Zee's 28 and Emma Helm's 26.
The Huskies faced off with Alabama earlier this year at the Husky Classic. Washington won both those games, picking up a 8-0 victory in five innings and a 4-1 win. Washington has won its last four matchups with Alabama, also winning twice in Tuscaloosa in 2017.
These two teams have met in the postseason three times, twice in Alabama and once in Seattle. Washington fell to Alabama in Super Regionals in 2016 and in Regionals in 2015, but defeated the Crimson Tide in Super Regionals in 2007 in Seattle.
Entering Super Regionals, Alabama is 36-18 on the season, having gone 12-12 in the SEC. Alabama also won their Regional in three games, run-ruling Middle Tennessee and Wisconsin before beating Oregon State 6-0 in the championship. The Crimson Tide are 9-9 on the road this season and 10-3 in neutral site matchups.
Washington and Alabama will play on Friday, May 25 at 6:00 pm and Saturday, May 26 at 4:00 pm. Game three, if necessary, will be Sunday, March 27 at 4:00 pm. All three games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.
