Huskies Tied For 10th Following Day One At NCAA Championships
May 18, 2018 | Women's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. – The 15th-ranked University of Washington women's golf team teed off for the first round of stroke play at the 2018 NCAA Championships on Friday and carded a score of 15-over 303 at Karsten Creek Golf Course, good for a tie for 10th. No team out of the 24 that earned a spot in Stillwater finished under par in round one on the par-72, 6,328-yard course.
"I was proud of our group today for sticking to our game plan," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "This is a really tough course and it played that way today as no one is under par. We started on the easier nine and played that well and had a tough few holes on our back nine but we struck the ball really well today and when those putts start falling we will be in a good place. You don't advance because of your day one score as we have seen so I'm ready to see how they respond tomorrow but we feel good and are just trying to have fun and enjoy the experience."
Washington was led by junior Sarah Rhee and freshman Rino Sasaki, who each went 3-over 75 to tie for 35th. After starting round one on hole 10, Rhee was one of two Dawgs to make the turn at even par following 10-18. She opened the day going one-under through her first six thanks to a birdie on hole 12. Over the next 11, she carded four bogeys en route to her 3-over.
Sasaki also had a quick start to the day, getting to 2-under after just three holes. The freshman birdied the par-3 11th and the par-4 12th hole and followed that with two pars on the next two. She then bogeyed holes 15, 16 and 17 to make the turn at 1-over. Sasaki had the second-best score on the squad over her final nine holes, going 2-over due to bogeys on holes five and six. Her 13 holes of par or better on the day were only second to Rhee's 14.
Next in the lineup for the Dawgs was sophomore Karen Miyamoto as she sits tied for 51st with her 4-over 76. After a difficult first nine that featured three bogeys, Miyamoto responded quickly after the turn, making birdie on the par-4 second hole. She closed her round strong with two pars and a birdie on hole nine to finish with a 76.
Junior Wenyung Keh was the other Husky to make the turn at even par as she went 1-under through her first six holes. Keh was one of three Huskies to birdie the par-4 327-yard 12th hole. Following a bogey on 16, Keh opened her second nine with a double on hole one. She would go on to add three more bogeys on holes four, five and six en route to her 5-over 77 which places her tied for 68th. Rounding out the UW squad was junior Julianne Alvarez who sits tied for 88th at 7-over 79.
Washington continues stroke play on Saturday and will look to climb the leaderboard in hopes of earning one of the 15 spots that continues to play on Monday.
