STOCKTON, Calif. --- Junior Carl Yuan posted a 4-under par 68 and is tied for fourth overall while sophomore Henry Lee carded a 2-under 70 and is tied for 13th after one round at the 2018 NCAA Pacific Regional on Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
The Husky duo posted solid first-round scores despite struggling on the tough course. Yuan had a solid start to the tournament, posting seven birdies and was briefly in the lead near the end of the round. However, he would bogey three of the final four holes to finish at 4-under.
"Carl had a really interesting round," said UW Head Coach Alan Murray. "He was in 13 bunkers today—not often you do that and shoot 68. So that is a unique and impressive stat."
Yuan finished the front nine at 3-under, opening the round with a birdie, then adding two more on six and eight. He would card birdies on 10 and 11 to open the back nine and moved into the lead with a birdie on 14. Yuan had a bogey on 15 but followed with a birdie on 16 to briefly go back into the lead. But bogeys on 17 and 18 would see him finish with a 68.
"He had it at 6-under at one point during the round and he made a great putt on 18 for a bogey which keeps his momentum," said Murray.
Lee played a solid round with three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars on the day. After five pars to open the round, he birdied the par 5 sixth to go to 1-under. After making the turn, he would card another birdie on 11. Lee's only hole over par was the par-3 15th where he would bogey, but he birdied the next hole and finished with a 2-under 70.
"(The round) was solid," said Lee. "I didn't really hit it great, but had really good spin on the greens and missing in the correct spots. It was a pretty boring round but it was fun. Hitting the fairways is pretty key here."
Both Yuan and Lee played the par 5s well, recording birdies on three of the four over the opening round.
"Neither of the guys could win it today and they have played well and put themselves in a really good position with two rounds to go," said Murray. "There are opportunities out there and they are both good enough to make a lot of birdies as Carl showed today."
UC Davis' Ryan Han leads the group of 10 individuals after carding a 5-under 67 over the first round. He is tied with Daniel Sutton of Kansas and Stanford's Brandon Wu in the lead in medalist play. The golfer with the lowest score not on one of the five teams which advance to the National Championships earns an individual berth to the final.
The region's 10th seed Iowa State is the surprising team leader after round one at 10-under-par with top-seed Alabama is three shots back in third with Kansas in second at 8-under.
Lee opens the second round tomorrow at 9:53 am with Yuan following in the three-some right after at 10:04 am.
