SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- Sophomore Henry Lee posted a second-round 65—the lowest round by a Husky this season—en route to a 13th place finish in medalist play as the Huskies placed 12th at the Western Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz.
In their final regular-season competition, the Huskies stayed in the top five through much of the first two rounds. However, things fell apart in the final round as Washington dropped to 12th overall with a score of 32-over 1082 (354-365-372) in the six count five scoring.
"Tough day for us and we obviously slipped down the leaderboard," said Head Coach Alan Murray. It was another disappointing week from a results standpoint but we had some encouraging signs this week: Henry played solidly again and finished 13th in a strong field; Noah Woolsey had another steady performance and continues to improve; Shamu and Will got a taste of being in the lineup and contributed; Carl had an unusually poor week which hurt us as he is our number 1 player and Frank played some good stuff also."
The day started with Washington wrapping up the second round of play which was suspended due to darkness. Lee paced the Huskies with a pair of birdies over the first two holes of the day, but ended with a pair of bogeys. Still, the sophomore carded a 5-under 65 and moved into the top 10 in the tournament field. Lee was unable to lower his score in the final round, finishing with a 3-over 73 to end up at 2-under 203 (70-65-73).
Freshman Noah Woolsey also posted a final-round 73, finishing at 5-over 215 (70-72-73) and tied for 41st overall. Woolsey started the final round strong with a birdie and sat at 1-under through the first seven holes. But he gave back five strokes over the final 11 holes to finish at 3-over.
Junior Carl Yuan had a rough second round, finishing at 7-over 77 and closed out the tournament with a 74 to post an 11-over 221 (70-77-74). Yuan had an up-and-down final round, posting a handful of bogeys, but also recording an eagle on six followed two birdies on the next three holes.
Freshman Shamu Bodhidatta also finished at 11-over 221 (71-75-75), with senior Frank Garber posting a 13-over 223 (73-73-77). Junior William Mansfield finished his first competitive round for the Huskies with a 20-over 230 (82-71-77), recording an impressive 1-over in the second round—the second-best score in the second round by Washington.
The Huskies take a few weeks off before heading down to Los Angeles on April 23-25 for the 2018 Pac-12 Championships at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Rolling Hills, Calif.
"We need a really big week at PAC 12s to keep the season alive so it's a case of sharpening our short games and being as clinical as possible close to the hole," said Murray.
