ROLLING HILLS ESTATE, Calif. --- Carl Yuan posted a pair of rounds in the 60s and is in fifth place overall in medalist play with a 7-under par 135 as the University of Washington sits tied for ninth after the first two rounds of the 2018 Pac-12 Championship at the Rolling Hills Country Club on Monday.
The Huskies played solid golf, posting a pair of rounds of 1-over-par 356 through the first two rounds.
Yuan led the way for Washington through the first two rounds. In the first round, he posted a 4-under 67, carding six birdies before a double on the 18th saw him post at 4-under. Yuan got the second round off to a good start with an eagle on the first hole and was at 4-under through the front nine. He would card three birdies over the first four holes of the back nine to sit at 7-under 14 holes, but gave back four strokes over the final four holes to finish at 3-under.
At 7-under par, Yuan is just three shots behind the two leaders at 10-under with two rounds to go.
"Carl has had a really great first two rounds," said Head Coach Alan Murray. "His poor finish in round 2 shouldn't deflect from a really fine performance and he has a chance to win the tournament with 2 rounds left."
Junior William Mansfield had an impressive performance, posting back-to-back rounds of even par and is tied for 30th overall at 142 (71-71). Mansfield, who was in the scoring lineup for just the second time this season, posted the Huskies' second-best score through two rounds despite playing from the No. 6 position.
Mansfield opened the day with a birdie on his first hole and added another on six to sit at 2-under through nine holes. He struggled on 13 and 14, carding a double and a bogey, respectively, to go to 1-over, but would rebound with a birdie on 15 to go back to even par. Mansfield had three holes below par while also posting a double and bogey over the second round. The two rounds matched Mansfield's best as a Husky set last time out at the Western Intercollegiate.
"Will Mansfield played really solid golf and has the chance to register a good finish if he can continue that over next 2 days," said Murray.
Noah Woolsey, Frank Garber and Jan Schneider each finished the first two rounds at 5-over 147. Woolsey rebounded from a rough first round, which saw him finish with an 8-over 79. But he opened the second round with a birdie and after 14-consecutive pars, he birdied 16 and 17 and finished at 3-under 68.
"Noah bounced back well in round 2 with a bogey free 3 under par round," said Murray. "He has some momentum heading into last 2 rounds."
Garber had an up and down first round, recording three birdies but also five bogeys and finish at 3-over 74. The second round got off to a rough start for the senior, who sat at 5-over through the first five holes. But he would record three birdies over the last 13 holes to finish at 2-over 73.
"Frank played a really good last 12 holes today after getting off to a tough start in round 2," said Murray. "He showed a lot of heart and grit to do so. I'm really proud of his efforts."
Schneider got off to a strong start, posting an even par 71 in the first round. But he struggled in the second round and finished 5-over 76.
"Jan struggled in round two after a really solid opening round of even par. He leaked oil on his back nine this afternoon," said Murray.
Henry Lee, who had played well over his last few tournaments, had a rough time on the first day of the Pac-12 Championships. He opened with a 2-over 73 after a pair of bogeys over the final three holes. Lee opened the second with a birdie but struggled over the back nine to a 5-over 76 to finish at 7-over 149.
"Henry struggled today and said he just needed to hit better iron shots," said Murray. "He is capable of shooting a low number out there and I am sure he will do so."
The Huskies open the third round of competition on Tuesday beginning at 10:06 a.m. Washington will be paired with Washington State and Utah over the third round with the final round slated for Wednesday.
